China - use bank card (Maestro) to pay for hotels in HK and China?

I have an upcoming trip to both HKG and the mainland and am wondering if anyone here has any experience using an EU bank card (Maestro) to pay a hotel there. Both hotels accept major credit cards, but of course a maestro bank card is neither a CC nor does it have that number format. This particular card has been used to pay for hotels in other places (widely throughout Europe but also in India) but I don't recall if I've used it at either of these hotels. Neither hotel's website mentions this but neither have any of the others where I've used it.

Why don't you ask the hotel directly in writing then you will have proof of acceptance or non-acceptance in writing from them?

I have actually emailed both hotels in question but have not yet gotten a response. It's not a critical issue either way but I was (am) curious about any FTers anecdotal experiences in this particular situation.

Maestro cards are not well-accepted around the world in my experience. They normally work fine in ATMs, but not so fine at retailers.
