Could the Yaris be the worst car in the Hertz fleet? A new one might be okay but if a car doesn't have a trunk, its almost useless to me.

Every car should have power windows/locks and AC

I used it for local commuting for a week and liked it for great gas mileage, easy city parking, and was able to move a 50" tv that I bought with the hatchback and rear seats down.

Would I go on a trip in it, no way, but I do not rent sub compacts for trips, instead I pay more for the rental and up to 2x as much for gas due to lower mileage.

Grand marquis, hands down. Would take a Yaris any day of the week instead.

I'm sure others differ, but we really didn't care for the Altima 2-door we got a couple weeks ago for a 1-way to SFO. For some reason, the "Standard" class is filled with these in some places (the 4-door is considered "Full Size", though an Impala has a lot more room).

I took it because it was a short trip, but found that the trunk and rear seat room for the kids was significantly smaller than the 4-door, and has all of the other annoying Altima features (the stupid non-key that you have to find a place for -- too bad there isn't, I don't know, a slot in the dashboard to hold it...). And couldn't get the seat high enough to not feel like I was driving in the turret of a tank.

Got a Ford Fiesta 1-way from SFO, considered Compact; I was apprehensive, but it was actually a nice little car to drive, and seemed to have a bigger trunk and more rear seat room than the 2-door Altima (but I was alone, so couldn't compare real legroom).

The worst car I got ever was a Hyundai I10 in Dusseldorf Germany.

Have a look: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0f/Hyundai_i10_Front-view1.JPG

I agree with the Grand Marquis being worst, but give me an Impala LTZ any day. Jim

The keyfob slot is to the left of the steering wheel near the trunk release, same place in most Nissan/Infiniti vehicles.

I thought the best place for the FOB was in your pocket. Jim

Well that too, I never take mine out of my pocket, but obviously some people prefer the old style key in the ignition.

How do you unlock the car? I keep my keys, wallet, and change in the same pocket. Perhaps if it was my car I'd be able to just reach in and press the right button by feel, but with a rental I have to pull it out and look.

Now if it was some sort of automatic proximity unlock and lock, that could be useful, but I imagine technical and security issues with that.

I'm a high-tech gadget guy in general, and thought the pushbutton start was a really cool idea at first, but the disadvantages outweigh the neat-o factor for me, for a rental at least.

There is a button on the door handle that you press with the key in your pocket and it unlocks the car door (proximity), driver's first followed by all other doors, same for the trunk. You can also lock the doors with the same button. There is absolutely no reason to pull the key out of your pocket unless the battery is dead. (Note: One cool feature with Nissan's with Intelligent Keys is if you press and hold the unlock button on the remote within unlock distance it will roll down the windows)

I still am lost on how it is not convenient and it is 100% more secure as the combinations of codes is infinite compared to number of tumbler lock combinations.

NO! Keyfobs are an evil invention, they serve no purpose, and create a problem of what to do with the key, and a risk...

I was switching cars with Mrs. RD. She had the home car, I had the Hertz Altima or Maxima with keyfob. I got out, with the fob in my pocket. She got in the Nissan and drove it away. ACK!!

Had I not tracked her down she could have shut the car off anywhere, with no way to start it.

Keyfobs are a pointless waste of engineering talent.

And having keys in my pocket while driving is uncomfortable!

I have been using keyless cars for about 10 years and can only commend this wonderful invention. The hands free card just remains in my wallet and I do not have to care about pressing buttons or finding keys, or locking the car when I walk away.
Just perfect. When I drive a car with old style keys it's knowing what to do with the key that is a problem! :p

Unfortunately for you, at least in HNL and LIH, there are a bunch of new 4dr Yaris around with Hertz barcodes. They're all about a month old. I'd probably take a Yaris over a Grand Marquis. I was PRAYING they didn't have any at LIH and luckily they didn't.
