Saturday, August 25, 6 pm. Please advise if you will be coming as the restaurant would like a count.
Who among us will be tough enough to fulfill "Da Big Hurt Challenge"?:
Handmade 35-ounce Angus patty topped with American Cheese & Bacon on a special bun.
Finish it by yourself & receive a FREE Shoeless Joe’s BIG HURT T-Shirt. $24.99
UA's Captain Denny will once again be in Chicago and we are having a dinner with him August 25 to kick off fundraising for the Jason Dahl Scholarship Fund. Captain Dahl was the pilot of United Flight 93 on 9/11 and a friend of Captain Denny. After his death, a foundation was started to provide scholarship support to students of aviation.:
http://dahlfund.org/
For those of you unfamiliar with Captain Denny, here is a WSJ profile of him from a few years ago:
And a CBS video from 2007: http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=3223866n
Also attending will be Captain Denny's friend American Airlines Capt John Lohmar. He is the owner and operator of a T-6 Texan in which he competes at the Reno Air Races each year in mid September, and he'll be showing videos and discussing his racing.
Here is the thread from last year about a very similar event:
Donations (federally tax-deductible, as the Dahl Fund is a 501(c)3 organization) will be taken in the days after the dinner and tickets will be issued to donors for a drawing to be held 9/11 as was done last year. When we have all the details on prizes and the donation process, they will be posted in the Flyertalk Cares! forum. Please subscribe to this thread or check in periodically.
Hope to see you there. Please post if you definitely will come or might come so we can get a count. Thanks.

I leave the day after Labor Day for a 9-day biz trip to AMS and my clients wait until the last minute to get me info I need for work that needs to be done, so usually I'm working 7days/week the last couple of weeks of August. Not sure I'll be able to get away, although will try.

To all my flying friends,
If you are in ORD on the 25th I would love to see you. Last year on this date we were remembering the memory of Capt Jason Dahl and that is what I would like to do again. It is not a fund raiser per se because I am not going to ask for any money during the dinner. The raffle takes place through the Flyer Talk blog which sandiego1k will post on the 25th and chances are accepted on the dahlfund.org website via paypal.
Last year we raffled off a ride in a WWII T-6 Texan. American Airlines Capt John Lohmar owns the aircraft and will again offer it as our prize. Capt John races the aircraft at the Reno Air Races in mid September and the winner will also get two tickets and pit passes to the race. Capt John will also be joining us at the dinner and will bring along some footage of his Reno Racing career.
As you all know Capt Dahl tragically lost his life when terrorist took control of his aircraft. His wife, Sandy Dahl, started a scholarship in his name to keep his memory and love of flying alive. She has commented many times that this effort lets the terrorist know that they have not won.
Sandy presented ten students with $18,000 in scholarships on May 12th. Two weeks later she passed away in her sleep at a young age of 52. Sandy will be sadly missed. Sandy was a terrific advocate for Jason and both their memories will be with us as we continue her work.

I've got 2 of them. I'm thinking of staying at the Renaissance O'Hare Suites since last report in the Marriott forum said they offered buffet breakfast on weekends. Need to confirm that though.
Ren ORD Suites, Marriott ORD Suites & Marriott ORD are all Cat 4, so any of them will work. Not sure if there's a big difference between where they're located & the dinner venue. Speaking of which, do we know the dinner venue?
PS - If I make it, I might do public transportation this time, so would need a ride to/from the dinner.

I'm looking at the Ren ORD Suites because, unlike the other 2 properties, it offers a buffet breakfast to Gold/Plats (just confirmed this on the phone) on the weekend when the lounge is closed. And the rooms are suites. Also, supposedly it's only a 5-10 minute walk from the Blue Line.

I'd vote for Ren too. Rooms are large. Blue Line is less than 5 min walk; maybe a 5 min crawl. Buffet breakfast is good too, with made to order stations and a good selection of fruit. Buffet lunch isn't bad either. ;)
FS Marriott (not Suites) is also close to L.

Thanks! Too bad I'm a lowly Silver with Marriott. But the rooms sound good and the short walk to the Blue Line (if accurate) is a plus, too. So maybe I will book that hotel as well.

I've just posted information about this year's scholarship drive here:
pshuang won last year's drawing. He has committed up to a $1K match for donations received by noon CST on Sunday. He hopes that this encourages those attending the dinner as well as all FTers to start their giving. Remember, he will only match what is given up to $1K. If we only raise $200 by Sunday, that's what he will match. We've got a goal of $10K to raise to give out the ride, so would really like to take advantage of every dollar of his gift.

Here's the link to the video Capt Denny mentioned:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uM-M8k9L9Uc
I put together this video in 2010. Take a look at it before the dinner so you can see what a day at the Reno Air Races is like - fun! We were trying to show it at the dinner, but logistically it is difficult to pull off. This is the first video I ever did, and little did I know at the time, it has become an involved hobby of mine.
John has raced his T-6 "Radial Velocity" each year since 2007. He has improved his finishing results each year he has raced, and has qualified in the Gold class (the fastest of three classes) the past three years.
John will be at the dinner in Chicago on the 25th and can talk more about racing in Reno. Last year we teamed up with FlyerTalk to help raise money for the Jason Dahl Scholarship fund. In addition to having a very successful fund-raising drive, the race team was grateful to receive great publicity on the FlyerTalk forum and Facebook and we now display the FlyerTalk logo on the airplane during the races. We are looking forward to another great year at the races and raising money for the scholarship fund. I am hoping to make a new race team video this year in which we will show the FlyerTalk logo.
Looks like it's going to be another good get-together in Chicago this weekend. I am still hoping to be there, but I won't know until the day of since I am scheduled to be on call.
Standby for some pix of the FlyerTalk logo on the airplane.

Her Majesty's Postal Service?
Hereditary Mixed Polyposis Syndrome?

I am totally swamped with work & really shouldn't attend, but I decided I'm going to come anyway to see 2 of my favorite captains (if Dan makes it as well as Denny) & FTers.
I've decided to do the public transport thing, so will need a ride to/from the dinner if someone has a car. I'm at the Renaissance ORD Suites, which is at 8500 W. Bryn Mawr.
Cheers.

I checked in around 10 p.m. at the Sheraton ORD (formerly Sheraton Gateway, formerly Sheraton Suites). Shoeless Joe's is right across the street, so I mosied over for an Italian Beef to supplement the mushroom soup and cold chicken salad lunch provided earlier in the day by UA en route from SFO.
This was my first time at Shoeless Joe's. It's really loud. The server confirmed "A reservation for Bill for 25 at 6 p.m. Saturday." She said there are no private rooms and they don't turn down the music. I suppose we can text message each other.
The Sheraton has an airport shuttle that runs every 30 minutes until 11 p.m. and then on request after 11 p.m. I guess one could always take the Renaissance shuttle back to the airport and then catch the Sheraton shuttle followed by dodging traffic to get across the street to Shoeless Joe's on one green light ... and reverse the process after the Do.
Looking forward to seeing everyone tonight.

I'm at the ORD Hyatt right now (9300 Bryn Mawr), if anybody is around or wants to meet for a drink, etc.
Plenty of free snacks in the regency club.

It was great to see FTers, & the 3 Captains last night! Good way to start the Cap'n Dahl Fundraiser!
Can't believe I forgot my camera; learning how to use one of the disposable ones  :D I'll take it it into a place to get the film developed/put on a CD, and will then upload photos to my website/post link here.
Cheers.

My hats off to toomanybooks and sweet_willie for an enjoyable evening. It was nice to see familiar and new faces. The evening was well organized and toomanybooks picked the perfect waitress(Kailee). She should be invited to all the FT events. Each person received their own personal bill from her at the evenings end and no errors were made.
Thank you everyone for coming.

Special thanks to Capts Denny, Dan and John and everyone else for a wonderful evening. Heartily agree that Kailee did a fabulous job -- maybe we should recommend her to our favorite Chicago airline to do a refresher course on customer focused service.

Great to see all of you and to meet many of you. Thank you toomanybooks and Sweet Willie for getting it together. A very nice evening and great way to kick off the fund raising drive.
I hope of some you make it out to Reno during the Air Races (Sep 12 -16). Look us up, PM me or leave a note on the Radial Velocity Facebook page if you can. It looks like I'll be there in the early part of the week (like 10th and 11th). I have not seen the airplane yet, but John said the FlyerTalk logo will be on the front of the airplane this year - better for pictures.
If you all will recall, I forgot my digital camera & bought one of those single-use film cameras. So the quality isn't as good as digital. Actually I'm not so sure it's due to the camera, but where I had the film developed. Anyway, at least we have some images from that evening.
Again, good seeing the 3 Captains & other FTers that night!
Cheers.

Hi Everyone,
It may be a little past the event to post this on this thread, but for those of you who met "Capt John" that evening, here's the video I did of him racing in Reno. Pass around the link, email it, share it, post it - we want everyone to see what a great Team Radial Velocity is and what a great event each year in Reno.
I was sure to include a great shot of the FlyerTalk logo on the airplane. ^
