Chase Ultimate Rewards - How many Chase cards do you/can you have?

What is the maximum number of primary chase issued cards one person can have?

Chase seems to have great affinity cards (CO, UAL, PC, BA, SWA, Marriott) for consumers and businesses.

You can have several if your credit is good. Now that the Bank One purchase is complete I have at least 5 Chase cards, maybe 6.

I was thinking about how to maximize rewards with the new dynamic rewards scheme on the Chase Freedom card. With the dynamic rewards scheme you can earn 3.75% cash back on your top 3 spending categories each month, but are limited to $600 in those top 3 categories per month per card.

(Note that the 15 spending categories eligible for the 3.75% reward are: grocery stores, gas & convenience stores, quick service payment/fast food restaurants, telecommunications, cable/satellite TV/Internet Service Providers, video rentals, department stores, dry cleaners, drugstores, movie theatres, local and suburban commuter passenger transportation (including ferries, bridges, tolls, parking garages, taxis/limos), pet supply stores and veterinary services, utilities, beauty shops (salons and spas), or gym/recreation memberships.)

If the number of Chase Freedom cards one could possess was unlimited, then you could earn 3.75% cash back on all of your spending in all 15 eligible categories. For most folks, it probably wouldn't be worth the hassle of managing more than a few Freedom cards though.

Does anyone know how many Chase Freedom cards one can have at a time?

Also, since Chase has other cards that offer 2%-5% back on other categories like travel, office supply stores, home improvement stores, restaurants, vehicle rentals, etc. that would be good to combine with the Freedom card, I was wondering if there was an upper limit on how many Chase cards one can have of any type (Freedom or other)?

Probably a great question for fatwallet.com. In fact, the answer may be posted over there already.

There was some discussion that I recall on FW of a 4 or 5 card limit on Chase. Many said only 4, but I happen to have 5. Up to that wouldn't be an issue I would imagine (ignoring credit worthiness of course).

I have 5 Chase cards, but before I applied for the Freedom I actually had 6. When I applied for Freedom they accepted readily and gave me a high credit line, but they closed two older cards that I hadn't used for a while. No biggie to me. Chase is rather good to me, lots of possible exposure considering they also hold my mortgage.

I have a free for one year UA Visa that just had the fee posted for the second year, so now I'm going to have to deal with either closing or turning that into something else. Maybe I can get a second Freedom that way. I'll find out probably next week sometime.

If you redeem your cash rewards in $200 increments, then Chase will give you a bonus $50 (i.e. $250 for $200 in earnings). So that works out to 3.75% instead of just 3%. (Note that it also means 1.25% on all "other" spending rather than just 1%.)

I don't see anything in anyones reply in this thread saying they carry a balance month-to-month and pay the ridiculous interest rates on a rewards card. As such, I'm not seeing your point, unless it's to fulfill your signature line.

It's implied that you don't revolve any balance. The card charges nothing as long as you pay in full each month.

I want to apply for Chase stuff. FICO's range from 750-800. Moderate to thick credit file. Decent income w/ long time stable job.

Which cards should I apply for? I thought that the Hyatt, 80K Priority Club (I was targeted for the 80K card :)) and the 50K CO card looked decent.

How many cards should I apply for? I would guess two Chase applications would be now OK, then more later. 3 apps may be pushing it.

Can you advise me what is my best course of action. Thank you for your help. :)

Hard to say. My score is in the same range as yours. The biggest negative in my score according to Credit Karma is the average account's lifespan (i.e., how long the accounts have been opened). Everything else is excellent.

It hasn't helped that I have opened the following accounts since last fall:
Continental CC for the 50K
AA AmExp for 75K
AA Visa for 75K
and I'm waiting on the Hyatt card.

To compound matters my oldest accounts are:
Discover card
Diners Club

I really want to cancel the Diners Club card once I figure out what to do with my 150K points since I don't use it and don't want to pay the annual fee but that will further ding the average age of my accounts.

I guess the trick is to have a couple of accounts with no annual fees and keep them opened forever. Then with the other accounts open and close them yearly.

Personally I don't see why the average age of your accounts has any bearing in your credit score. It should be income, reliability in paying your debts, any negative issues such as bankruptcies and debt to assets. I don't see any reason why me keeping cards like the two above should be a positive thing if I'm not using them.

Thanks! I applied for the 80K PC & 50K CO. Both got the 30 day response. Will apply for Hyatt & something else (Chase) 6 months later.

I have 2 chase cards that used to be WAMU. Perfect pay history. I keep those for credit history as I applied for them in 2006.

OK - this could be an issue.... i'm not sure if they'll let you have 3 cards open from chase.

i'd call them with your reference and see what you can do over the phone. you may have to move some credit lines or cancel one of the cards

I have researched similar threads on FT but nothing comes up recently so here goes my question. I'm interested in the new Chase Marriott card offer. I currently have 3 Chase accounts (Priority Club, Sapphire, and Southwest) with about $2,000 per month charged monthly on the three cards. The PC card is old, Sapphire is from the late spring 2011 and the Southwest card is from this summer. How long should I wait to apply for the Marriott card? Will Chase give me 4 accounts (my FICO is 792)? Your help will be greatly appreciated. Happy travels!

I have never gone down that path. Is this difficult? Does it impact your credit score to have a card company deny you and then issue the card after a phone call.

It is completely a YMMV situation. What I was told was that for ME, I could be allowed no more than two "new" cards every 6 months. So, if you are denied, just call the reconsideration line, and it should have no effect on your credit score any more than just a "new" credit card (hard pull, new account, lower average age of accounts, etc.)

I got four Chase cards in the last year. If you get a denial, call the reconsideration line and offer to lower the limit on one of your other cards or close one of your other cards and they should be happy to do that and approve the new card. Of course YMMV. Works for most.

I have five Chase accounts. When I got a "pending" reply on the last one I called the CSR and he said they're fine with multiple accounts; it's the total credit line that they're watching. I switched credit between accounts, no problem. With your credit rating and spending history, I doubt you'll have any problem. Ask to switch credit line, or reduce credit on one or more of your others. And, if asked why you want the new one, it wouldn't be a bad idea to be ready to mention some nice feature of the card apart from the mileage bonus.

Oct 9, 11, 6:48 pm
I have 4 Accounts right now and the CSR told me that I would have no problem getting the Mariott card for my 5th chase account, even without moving credit around. I have about a 750 score and I was spending $3-5k a month between my chase cards. On the other hand literally 18 months ago they wouldn't give me a $500 card for my business so I don't know what their criteria really are, but they seem to me to be super strict, or super lenient.

Ive had the Chase UA for years and this year added the BA, Sapphire, Hyatt, and now Ink Bold with no calls rejections or hassles. I will cancel the BA to make room for a Priority Club to get a targeted 80K sign-up bonus. I am starting to evaluate the Sapphire as the Ink has replaced it and I may drop the Sapphire to get Explorer bonus or something nicer next year.

Don't cancel any cards. You're much better off applying and being turned down, then calling reconsideration and offering to close an existing card or move credit around. If you cancel the card yourself you lose this leverage.

In the spirit of Easter, consider this thread resurrected. I have seen comments by a number of FTers that Chase caps individuals at 5 or 6 cards. While I always have thought that to be arbitrary - rather than total limit across all cards, which seems more scientific - I haven't ever gotten past 6 open accounts...until an approval today. I now have 7 Chase cards, all with relatively low limits. No reconsideration call was needed.

Just approved for my 7th several minutes ago. Now have:
Chase Amazon: opened when I didn't know better but still there.
Chase Slate: Opened many years ago and still has a reasonable credit limit
Chase Freedom: go to card for purchases under $20 due to 10% bonus plus 10 points.
Chase Disney: only a year old but had, what I thought at the time, was a good signup bonus.
Chase Southwest: two months old, but 50K signup bonus counting towards companion pass.
Chase Southwest business: approved several minutes ago with 50K bonus.
Chase INK business: not sure why I have this - didn't know any better at the time.
Total credit line for the above is minimal - right around 50K

In addition, wife was recently approved for:
Chase Southwest - 50K bonus, and
Chase Sapphire - 50K bonus.

200K in last two months with minimum spends all met. Hopefully will see my companion pass shortly on my account as I will pick up the additional 10K with Erewards, Wyndham points, and some spending.

5. All personal.

- I've had the Amazon card for a number of years.
- I have a legacy United Plus card that earns EQM's for united.com purchases.
- CSP. . . one of my main cards.
- United Explorer. . . nice sign-up bonus earlier this year but not a card that I find much use for.
- Freedom. . . just signed up for earlier this year. Use for small purchases.

I'd like to add a hotel card or two, but I don't want to overdo it. I'd probably be okay keeping and paying the fee for the Explorer even with the limited use, but I may cancel it before adding the hotel card out of concern of having too many Chase cards.

Back in February I got a Chase Sapphire Preferred and this month I opened the Chase United MileagePlus Explorer. I'm needing United miles and Hyatt points as I am planning a trip to Maui in 6-7 months. When my plans are more definite, I would like to apply for the Chase Hyatt as I'm wanting the free two nights certificate. I'm figuring that I will apply for the Hyatt in November.

How many Chase CCs can be open at a time? Think I'd be okay obtaining 3 this year?

WOWWWEEEE! I have 3 Chase cards (just started in on this whole credit cards for miles/points last year) and my credit limit on the last card (SW Plus) was only $1,000. Didn't really care since I was getting it for the miles, but it's so low. I've recently gotten hubby into it, and am annoyed that he keeps getting higher credit limits than me! I've got excellent credit, and make more money (per hour) than he does, but since I'm only working part time after the arrival of our first child, his income is larger than mine.

I can't actually picture any scenario where I receive a 60K credit limit on a card. NICE!

I'm in my early 30's with a modest part-time income, and I've got the following cards/limits:

The 60k limit was after a credit limit increase request from the initial approval of 15K. The CSP limit resulted from combining now-closed card limits. I also reallocated some no-closed cards' limits to Palladium.

Starting with an existing Chase Slate card, I have added the following this week:

Hyatt
Marriott
Fairmont
IHG/Priority Club

I also added an SPG Amex, BofA Virgin Atlantic and Citi HHonors Reserve this week to boot. It took some shifting of some credit limits on the chase cards (seriously, some of the credit limits were in excess of $20K and I rarely go over $1K in spending!). Have to say the Chase reconsideration line was most helpful. Most of the cards have benefits I am willing to pay the annual fee for (like HHonors Gold status) and the SPG Amex is just a great one to have.

I would have gone for Citi AAdvantage as well, but I already have three cards (one of them has 20+ years of history).

After 3 months waiting, I pulled the trigger again. The only cards I like are all from chase. I am not churner of the credit card. I just like their product.

Three months ago, I posted about my experience to get 3 chase cards in one day. Some people just do not believe that.

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/credit-card-programs/1354466-one-day-three-chase-cards-four-months-total-6-chase-cards.html

Today's experience confirmed my view of chase policy: as long as you really need and use chase credit cards, and you have ability to pay for it, there is no specific limit how many cards you can get from chase.

Today I got priority club card and ink plus. All were under review first. After 5-10 minutes call with reconsideration line, both got approved without any trouble. They did ask why I need so many chase cards. I said from this feb I opened checking and saving accounts with chase. Your banker introduced me so many fantanstic credit card products. I applied for your cards every three months and I really need them and use them. You can check my account statement. I moved almost all my spending to chase cards. Every month I spent at least 50k on your credit cards and never missed payment.

That's it. They said they really appreciate my business and your card has been approved.

some background:my credit score ranged from 680 to 710 and short credit history.

Priority Club card is nice since I abandoned my marriott card and changed to intercontinental and hyatt. Usually I use PC point redemption to pay for my stay. This card has 10% for redemption and platinum membership. That is just what I want.

I like ink bold so much because of 5 points per dollar on office supply. But there is only 50k limit per year. That is not enough for my spending. Ink plus is almost same product except it is a credit card.

I entered points and miles world from this febuary and learned a lot from this forum. Almost all my air tickets and hotels were paid by points since then. I really appreciate the information I got here. Thank you all.

I do not think chase will close any of my account. My credit cards application is not for signing bonus although I like it. My personal card charges are daily expense like restaurant, supermarket, air tickets, hotel and luxuary stuff. My business card charges are mostly for office depot, staples, travel-related expense, gas and many other things. It is just normal and big.

Priority Club is a no brainer. You get a night at an IHG property for the $49 annual fee. You would be hard pressed to find a 3-4 star room in just about any major city in the world for less than $49/nt. Plus you get a 10% rebate on points redeemed AND you have platinum (top-tier) status with Priority Club as long as your a card holder. The Hyatt card is a little more blurry. You get a night in a cat 1-4 Hyatt property for the $75 annual fee. You may be able to find the occasional 3-4 star room for around $75/nt on some blind bidding sites. I feel like it's sort of a wash, but I still may keep the card because the included the platinum (mid-tier) status with Hyatt tilts the balance a bit. Plus i need a card with a chip to use when I travel.

I rarely fly United so I'll cancel that one when the fee comes due. The free check bag may make it worth it for some people though.

More on topic, I was just approved for 2 new Chase cards, but I had to cancel my Marriott card to get approved for the 2nd one. I now have the following:

Does everyone keep the cards with an annual fee? I am trying to decide if I should keep priority club, united, and Hyatt cards.

From what I have read, it seems that many do not cancel the Chase cards. Instead, they use them to negotiate with when opening new cards. I have 4 Chase cards now, two that I definitely wish to keep long term, one I definitely wish to close, and one that provides at least marginal benefits to offset the annual fee. That last I may close or keep open.

There are at least 2, maybe 3, Chase cards out that I would wish to open for bonus AND to keep longer term. These are hotel cards that offer a nice signup bonus plus free nights on renewal. (Priority Club, Marriott, Hyatt)

Closing a card outright can mean a ding on the credit score, as it can affect credit utilization ratio. I am not too worried about that as I keep that ratio at about 1% and can do so even after closing a card. But you may wish to factor that in your decision.

My own plan/hope is that when I apply for my next Chase card I will be asked to move credit lines around from existing cards. If so, at that time I can offer to close the card I no longer want. This would keep my credit line intact at Chase with no potential "ding" to my score from closing a card and reducing my credit line. I would have just the slight temporary "ding" from a new hard pull for the new card.

Before giving up all together, I called the Chase recon number after the Monday holiday. The woman was very nice as I explained that I just wanted to double check if only 5 personal cards are currently allowed as I was told this by recon over the weekend. She asked me to wait as she did some checking - she came back after a couple of minutes and said she would split the credit line of one of my other cards and have the new card application approved. I thanked her repeatedly and said that we use our Sapphire Preferred / Freedom combo 90% of the time, but when we fly on / stay at a Chase card affiliated airline / hotel, we then like to use that particular card. I have no intention of churning my Chase cards - I really do intend to keep and make use of all of them. So as of today I now have 1 Chase business card and 8 personal cards. :)

Hello,

I just got rejected by Chase for having "too many cards with us." Just curious, what's the threshold for having too many cards? Right now I have 5 cards, and I'm thinking to close some of them to avoid getting this type of rejection in the future. I've gotten the signup bonus on a lot of them, so there's no use keeping them around.

Also, does it have to do with the fact that my last card with them was only 2 months old? Maybe they see that I've applied for a card recently and it was too soon to apply for a new one?

Mindray
Oct 23, 12, 9:23 am
Nyold, so my advice would be to call their reconsideration line and explain your situation.

As far as I know there is no limit to the number of cards you can have with them. Ultimately, what they care about is the total credit they have extended to you. So you can ask them to potentially move credit from another card onto the card you recently applied/got denied for and see if that will make a difference.

If you can explain to them why you want a new card and are willing to move some credit around without them giving you any new credit, I'm not sure why they would deny you.

redtop43

I've had similar experiences, rejected because my credit line was already too high, I just asked them to reduce the line on one card and move it to another and I was approved with no problem.

2 months old for the most recent might be the reason, if you have 5 already.

Nobody talks about income on here. They seem to ask it on every application I've ever done. It stands to reason that someone with a $100k salary might be able to acquire 7+ Chase cards because they have more income to spread out, which means they have more credit lines that can be shifted. I would assume (and since nobody really likes to talk about their personal income, we're left with assumptions) that +760 score and +$100k total income would allow you more cards than +760 and $60k total income.

Score is only one factor in the approval process.

You could always apply for the Chase Ink Bold or Plus as they are both business cards.... they do have rather large spend requirements though so you may want to limit it to just two cards to start from Chase. At the end of the day it is up to you. Do you have a destination in mind with those miles? Why are you particularly interested in United?

There is no need to cancel the card until you are close to the annual fee. Chase will want to see that you use the card and do not just open it and then close it. If you wait at least 90 days in between "churns" that should be enough. I would recommend trying to use different banks for your churns though i.e. Citiank, BofA, Barclay, Chase, etc.

yeah ink or bold would be good but i think their spend is like 10k which is out of my range - with sapphire preferred and explorer thats 4k and is reasonable.
I am interested in United cause i live in near IAH so thats a united hub.

so if i wait for the 90 days with chase/or any other band i would get the signing bonus again? i thought it more time than that?

the destination that i am thinking of is either Hawaii , purto rico or Caribbeans. I think purto rico is closest and if i am not mistaken it take about 70k for a round trip ticket. its for our anniversary so i need at least 140k?

I'm sorry I must have miss read the part about canceling the card. If you want to cancel and then re apply to get the bonus again it can vary from card to card but I believe most would be about 18 months from one approval until you could apply again and get the bonus a 2nd time. I've heard (haven't tried yet, but will soon) that you can churn the US Airways card multiple times.

Are you looking to get to Hawaii, Puerto Rico, or the Caribbean in a premium cabin or just free airfare?

Let me know how it goes with US air as i am interested in that because they are partners with RJ and thats a destination i go to every two years or so...if i can rack some US air miles and use them that way that would be great.

I don't need premium cabin, just a free airfare is good enough !!

In the majority of cases, Chase will assign the maximum amount of credit they are willing to give you to the first card you receive from them. Most of their worthwhile cards are either Visa Signatures or World Mastercards, each of which require a minimum $5000 credit limit. So to determine how many Chase cards you think you can get, take the your current combined Chase credit limit and divide by 5K - that will let you know how many cards you could possibly get by shifting your credit around.

Yeah, no sweat. I picked up 3 personal and 1 business this year and I had picked up 3 personal last year.

Did you have to reallocate lines with each? Wife just signed up for first CSP back in October, now we want to get her the UA MP?

Did yall have to reallocate with your second card? Or are people only having to do that when they start getting extra cards?

My reallocation started with my 4th card... got a $30k limit on the Explorer and when I applied for the Freedom a month ago, I moved $15k from that card. Overall limit on all 4 cards is $70k. Ironically though, My Marriott card limit was slashed in half from $30 during the financial crunch which at the time was the only Chase card I had.

Cool! Thanks for the point of reference! We both have a solid credit history, I just wasn't sure since we've just gotten into the "game" more and neither of us had all that much experience with chase.

Data point -- I applied for Marriott Premier today and got "requires further processing". Called the reconsideration line. They told me I had 6 chase CCs already with a total credit line of $XXk. (CSP, BA, Freedom, Amtrak, United Explorer, Ink Bold.) Asked how much of a credit line I needed on Marriott; I said $Xk. They said they could approve it if I moved that credit line from another card and gave me a choice of which one. I picked the one I used least, and was approved for my 7th chase card.

So, question about the United MileagePlus card, I had a OnePass card since forever, and it finally expired this month. I was actually looking forward to receiving the new card because I know the United cards are VISA, and all the cards I have are MasterCard. One card has been used heavily, others are not so much, depending on which points/miles I need/better value. I have about 7 currently but always pay them off each month and also have had a mortgage with Chase for 20 years. They always told me I was one of their best customers. I churned a few. They've always given me much higher credit lines than I needed.

The supervisor said he didn't know anything and that I'd get a letter in 3-5 days. I have 250,000 UR points and was about to get 2 RT's on AirTran. Just two days ago they transferred my bonuses for the Southwest cards that got me a companion pass.

Actually, Chase allows two cards in 30 days. It doesn't matter if it's personal/personal or personal/business. You may be declined on the second application, but a call into reconsideration will clear it up.

Nope no transfers, many cards and they kept upping the CL's. 2 Amazon payments in past year, maybe 7 OD Vanillas last year, all accounts always paid to zero each month, and I have had a mortgage and savings with Chase for 20 years.

Unlike AmEx which gives you 2-week notice on an FR and lets you transfer out MR points, Chase on a whim and at random will close all your accounts and forfeit all your UR points. Never leave UR points in Chase.

I'm in a similar boat...I currently have six personal cards open and am going to be closing one to open a different card when the annual fee comes due. I'll probably be done for a while with Chase personal cards until the time comes to want the Hyatt card. Chase is really the best issuer with the exception of the AMEX warranty ease of use and perhaps some of the AMEX travel benefits, Chase has pretty much everything I could need and as a result they get most of my spending.

Yeah, I put 95% of all spending to my CSP, and am thinking about getting the Freedom for maximizing points/miles. However, as much as I want to get rid of my Amex Plat for that darn high fee, I cant help but love some of the travel perks and good warranty. Getting my rental car dinged but having Amex Plat as my primary premium CDW was enough for me to fall in love with that card. It would of cost me $1200 for a deductible, but instead only $19.95 because I purchased the Premium.

With the Sapphire card (CSP and CS), you get secondary coverage, pretty much most credit cards made have secondary coverage. I even have some unknown student visa card with secondary car rental coverage. Of course someone correct me if i'm wrong, but The MP Explorer card is now down to secondary as well. Its very hard to find a card that carries primary coverage. The MP Club card has primary coverage, but at $395 a year (and I did highly considered this card), the benefits of the Amex Plat suits me better. So yes, I need to pay 19.95 for Amex's primary coverage.

Update: the MP Explorer card has Primary still: https://www.chase.com/online/Credit-Cards/united_explorer-travel-protection.htm

Very awesome, but I am still loving my amex plat perks (although the versus talk should be discussed here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/chase-ultimate-rewards/1262826-amex-platinum-vs-chase-sapphire-preferred.html)

That would make sense to me. Churning cards or getting bonuses and never actually using the cards would probably raise a red flag. I recently received 2 new cards from them but am hoping that having a checking account and putting 40K spend a year on their cards keeps me safe.
