Personally, I'm thrilled about the Caribbean destinations added new and extended to year round! Now, which one to go to first?!?! :)

I'm glad they're finally expanding to Central America, and just shy of South America

May need to redeem the free WS flight I won at the Fun n Festivals booth at the Capital Ex on a trip to Costa Rica :) Although the tradition of Maui is still calling loudly :)

Too bad AA doesn't serve YEG.
HNL in the winter is one of the easiest upgrades!
Lucky. I only got 10% at the YYC stampede :(
(Though rich kettles could still buy -UP fares, expecting much more than they really paid for.)
They are also cutting London-Winnipeg, the evening London-Calgary, and the winter London-Vegas.

Toronto - Kingston year round makes sense but the same for Toronto - Aruba? Less sense to me but that's only MHO.
Having Manzanillo out of Calgary opens up a few more choices so ^

I found this on another site.
Other than the new markets and an increase in capacity to Hawaii, there isn't really much new this winter.
Las Vegas from the east is down but that isn't a big surprise as it is a much longer trip from the east vs an easy 2.5hrs from the west with no more than a 1hr time change.....and GREAT for a weekend getaway.
They haven't loaded in their Alberta to Hawaii non-stops but that wasn't done until October last year. There is some speculation there will be 2 757's this year! This will increase Westjet's dominance to Hawaii this winter.

Airline's popular non-stop service returns with additional aircraft and more flights
CALGARY, July 25, 2012 /CNW/ - WestJet announced today it has leased two Boeing 757-200 aircraft from Thomas Cook Airlines to deliver more non-stop, daytime service between Calgary and Honolulu and Maui, and between Edmonton and Maui.
Pending regulatory approval*, flights are scheduled to begin December 13, 2012, and continue through April 21, 2013. Details of WestJet's seasonal non-stop service include:
Route Weekly frequency
Between Calgary and Honolulu Twice weekly
Between Calgary and Maui Four times weekly
Between Edmonton and Maui Three times weekly
Just as in the previous year, WestJet flight attendants will be on board the Boeing 757-200s to ensure the same great WestJet guest experience. Thomas Cook Airlines will provide the aircraft and pilots. The agreement complements the announcement in April that WestJet's Boeing 737 aircraft will provide more seat capacity for Thomas Cook in the 2012-2013 winter season. As an expansion to its successful, two-year, Canada-wide, partnership, WestJet is the only airline providing capacity for Thomas Cook's tour operator arm in the Canadian market.
"With this agreement, we can deliver our award-winning guest experience to more Albertans using a larger aircraft with greater range," said Bob Cummings, WestJet Executive Vice-President, Sales, Marketing and Guest Experience. "The decision to lease a second aircraft is a direct response to demand for service, and the additional flying will allow us to offer three additional daytime flights this winter at low fares. With this additional aircraft, we're pleased to offer each route one additional round-trip flight per week over last year."

I had heard through the normally reliable grapevine WS wouldn't be chartering the Thomas Cook 757's again this seas but apparently that was not the case.

I'm pretty sure Winnipeg-London has been summer-seasonal for years. It returns in Westjet's schedule on April 28 2013 for the summer.
The rest of the winter cuts are not surprising. Montego Bay / Negril / Runaway Bay are horribly overrated as vacation destinations.
As far as Mexico goes, I'd only go to the Cancun area, Puerto Vallarta, Ixtapa, Huatulco or Cabo. I'm always surprised that WestJet has not got more capacity into Ixtapa and no flights to Huatulco!
:)

Although I can't 100% be sure in the recent past, YXU-YWG used to be daily in summer and 3x/week in winter. Nothing in the newspaper article suggests Winnipeg is coming back next spring, and if those flights had been cancelled for winters in recent years, it never made the news. But hopefully they do increase service here again.

I'd like to get yeg-Yhm back year round instead of just in summer. Connecting in Calgary makes Pearson with it's larger choice of flight times more attractive even though my destination is Burlington.

WestJet is always shifting domestic capacity in the summer to the sunny south in the winter, starting the end of October, then switching it back in May. It seems like every year a reporter trying to create a controversy, rediscovers this and writes a story about it. It is nothing new and it goes on every year, without fail!
WS102 is loaded for sale starting April 28 2013 with a 9:54am departure arriving in London at 12:54pm. The turn-around flight is WS475 leaving London at 1:25pm arriving in Winnipeg at 2:47pm. It's priced at $179 each way.
Wow, that's a 31 minute turn!
I guess WestJet has figured out that there is WAY more money to be made operating flights to the sunny warm south in the winter rather than burning hydro carbons between Winnipeg and London, Ontario.
:)

See, what I was saying is that this hasn't been a story every year, which I think would have been (knowing our intrepid London Free Press reporters) had the flights been cancelled every winter. I do realize east-west gets reduced in many markets in favour of north-south.
