Miles & More (Lufthansa, Austrian, Swiss, and other partners) - Booked via UA MP, can I upgrade?

I booked two return flights on Lufthansa via miles with the UA MileagePlus program. There is a flight from MUC to ORD that I think I would like to upgrade. I am currently in Business Class and wouldn't mind the bump to First.

Is there a way to do this ahead of time? All of my flight miles are credited to UA. I am not opposed to spending USD to make it happen. I just would like to know how to do it, if possible.

Have the tickets been 'bought' with UA miles? In that case they cannot be upgraded. The only way to upgrade them is to wait for First Class awards to become available and to get the tickets changed by 'paying' for the difference with additional UA miles.

Paying for the difference with additional UA miles doesn't seem to be possible. I talked to the UA1K desk today regarding this exact question (plus a rant regarding Starnet Blocking) and the response was that you cannot upgrade award tickets. You'd have to cancel the I-award and then book the O-award in parallel. If you are Premier Plat / 1K / GS there's no fee associated with such a transaction, but keep in mind that you need enough miles for the O-award in your account, because the I-award refund might take a while.
