1 Last time i traveled early from SFO i found that the check in machines
came on 90 min before first departure but no agents came out for 20 min more. Is this common? Alot of anxious customers waiting boarding pass in hand

2 Does the skycaps actually appear outside at 90min before?

thanks in advance

This page (http://www.southwest.com/html/air/airport-information.html) says that they open 90 minutes before first departure. (You have to click on the little + next to the airport to get detailed info.

I would email WN and report this. Try here (https://www.southwest.com/contact-us/contact-us.html).

The staff has to turn the machines on.

I hope everyone here realizes what an enormous improvement this is over the situation that existed three years ago:
another thing that is needed is communication of counter operating hours.

I certainly appreciate it if no one else does. I refer to it often.

I also am sympathetic to the dilemma of the OP. It is very frustrating to have a complicated check in (COS CP) and be told to be at the airport 2 hours before my flight only to find the line is already 50 people long and it is still 30 minutes before the check in area will open.

At SMF, WN has no dedicated kiosks. Kiosks are run by the airport and work for all airlines. You touch the name of the airline you want, and go from there. I arrived way early (4a for 6a departure) one morning and found WN was missing from the kiosk. Apparently WN staff have to flip on their own dedicated BP server to turn on kiosk service. Interesting since they were the only airline missing from the kiosk.

Totally right on as this is what happens at SFO unfort
seems it would be helpful if WN had one or 2 staff checking bags at 2 hrs out to keep the line manageable
