Travel Technology - Taking computer parts on board

Would it be possible to carry on computer parts such as a CPU and a hard drive which I bought over seas (in the US) and bring them back home (UK) to use?

Would that need to be in the checked or carry on luggage?

And would I need to declare them?

Also should I keep them in the original retail box or package them myself?

Why do you think it would be a problem? The only possible issue could be customs if you bring a LOT of stuff back, but chances are they won't have a clue what the parts are. I'd just carry them in your carry-on and not worry about it, I've carried much worse.

If packed correctly it would be safe from breakage. But they may open the bag for inspection of the electronics, and just toss it back in any way possible. I would try to carry it on if you could.

You should not have any problems, they may want to do the swab test at security, but other than that they should let them through.

Dont see an issue with a cpu and hard drive in a carry-on. If new, I would keep in box and claim since purchased overseas.

I'd really advise against lying to customs. IF they ask, just tell them the truth. Tell them you got it outside the US, and they'll ask for proof.

I wouldn't go so far as to declare it, but if it comes up, your only way out is with honesty.

I always bring lots of electronic stuff back , and never have a problem at security ,
you get $700 worth of goodies to bring back if you are a USA passport holder and its not for resale.

I have no idea about the customs issues, but it shouldn't be a problem with security or anything like that.

Also, I would recommend making sure you have appropriate anti-static materials for packing them. Additionally, I think it would be wise to remove the CPU from the MB and replace the socket cover if it's currently installed in the MB.

I do it frequently, never a problem with security (TSA).

I always bring it with me into the plane (possibility of theft if in checked-in baggage), not in the original box (due to the volume occupied) but well packed with bubble wrap. If you will need the original package, disassemble/fold it as best as possible and put it into checked baggage.

As for customs, our destinations are different, so no experience here, but I'm usually under the allowed quota into my country, so no need to declare it.
