Le Club Accorhotels - Accor credit card pre-booking currency rate.

I hold a credit card in Euro.
Just noticed today that my two last bookings (both Pullman hotels in Thailand)
showing total in Thai baht have been charged directly in Euro, thus without conversion THB to EUR at a much lower exchange rate than the rate showed when inquiring exchange rates.

These were both pre-booked rates.
When I pay any expense with my credit card at a hotel/shop I always make sure I get charged in local currency (after I had a few bad exchange rates bypassing currency conversion)

I checked older bookings with Accor and all previous pre-bookings were charged in THB.

Did I miss an option on the screen where you submit your credit details???

If there is no such option I have issues with Accor

That's unusual. One's room booking usually gets charged in local currency. Check with your credit card company maybe it's already converted. How much higher are you talking about?

The only place I've come across this is in Hungary, where I've been charged in Euro (the local currency being the Forint, of course).

Accor's terms and conditions do say that you will be charged in either local currency or the "commercial currency" of the hotel (Clause 15.2). I can't really see why a Thai hotel would charge in Euros though.

Or Cambodia come to think of it where the default currency is USD but certainly not in Thailand.

Hi tartempion,

Thanks for your question. Your situation does seem a bit odd. I'm going to check with Accor and get back to you.

Take care,

Chris

I again booked several pre-paid stays at two Thai Accor properties and it seems it is Pullman King Power Bangkok who charges directly in the credit card's currency.

I believe it is against Accor's rules:
5. All reservations, regardless of their origin, are payable in the hotel's local currency unless specifically indicated otherwise at the hotel.

There is also no reference to the original currency amount, thus I do not know how much THB I was charged and I checked the exchange rate against the booked amount: bad exchange rate.

I sent them a mail asking explanations.
I will post their reply here.

This sounds like a case of dynamic currency conversion. If that is so, then my understanding is that dynamic currency conversion requires the explicit agreement of the person making the payment. Dynamic currency conversion is rarely a good idea as it normally results in unfavourable exchange rates.
