there is probably a thread on this, but I couldn't find it. what brands/types of facial cream do people find most effective before/during/after a flight?

That is such a highly subjective area that recommendations would be close to worthless. Just use whatever you normally use. Or if you want to be extra careful use something a bit more rich because the air can get really dry in planes.

Otherwise you might get more recs in the Women's forum.

Only thing I could recommend is to not shave directly before you go on a flight. I find that shaving is stressful for the skin and it does open the pores. Given that the travel environment is usually quite filthy and that one does touch ones face, I find that I easily get pimples when I have shaved directly before a flight. Especially wet shaving, of course. So I will do a really thorough shave the night before or only a quick electric shave the morning off. That's usually enough to get me through the first day. Of course, if you travel every day that is impossible to do, except by adjusting the shaving schedule to the evenings instead of the mornings.

I normally use an after shave balm after shaving. For a nearly unscented product I prefer the Nivea Sensitive that comes in a nice glass bottle (heavy thus not very suitable for traveling). I didn't for once like the Neutrogena product Triple Post Shave balm. It stings. The L'Oreal was too rich for me. I like a more liquid application. Biotherm Post-Shave Balm is the best in my eyes but very expensive.

From the big name brands I found Gucci by Gucci balm to be very good. Also Armani (the classic one) and Aramis after-shave balms are wonderful. The latter two are strong enough so you won't need a cologne on top of it. The Gucci can support the cologne which is not very long-lasting, unfortunately.

I have also recently tried Terre d'Hermes. The cologne is superb but almost too strong for traveling. It is so strong that dosage becomes a bit difficult. A single spritz divided between wrists, face and chest is enough of the cologne. The balm is a good compromise. It also smells very strongly but not as strong as the cologne. However, it is a richer consistency and again it stings the skin a little bit.

So many variables...
Male or female?
Age?
Normal (non-flight) skin concerns?
What moisturizers do you use on a daily basis?

I tend to think kiehl's makes great moisturizer and great products in general. I like companies that specialize in one thing... Like Kiehl's. I just don't like the idea of buying face cream from Prada.

Glad you found it helpful. :)

Main advice would be to drink a lot (moisture from within and gets rid of toxins in your body that are bad for the skin), eat well, sleep well and stay out of the sun. Thus choosing a moisturizer with SPF as your after shave balm is probably a good idea. Not shaving when you don't have to (weekends for example) also gives welcome reprieve to your skin.

And while you are at it, use some stimulating hair tonic. The massage action more than the tonic itself will keep your hair on your head longer.

And take great care of your teeth. That's what goes directly after the hair goes.

Those are probably the most basic tips for good looks (male or female) but too few people follow them. I've been lax on the teeth thing. They still look good because after all my intervention wasn't too late but it was a painful intervention! :(

I've been using this for about 10+ years now. http://www.pharmacymix.com/product.aspx?ProductID=4601

Your face will thank you when you hit 40. It's not the moisturizer that keeps your skin taut and elastic. It's avoidance of sun or limiting of UVB and UVA rays. Trust me. My cousin is a dermatologist and she orders this stuff from Canada every year for the whole family even though the ingredient called Mexoryl (that L'Oreal uses) is not approved by the FDA.

Till - awesome advice. Thanks a ton. Chgoeditor - I'm a 27 year old guy who can usually get by keeping face clear w just using water. I'm pretty lucky but nevertheless, want to preserve my skin bc I know wrinkle are coming in just a few years! When I was 27 I had the same attitude as you. I almost never put moisturizer on my skin, though I did wash with a facial cleanser.

I happened to stop at a cosmetics counter and the clerk commented about my lovely skin and asked what I used. I said nothing. She looked me straight in the eyes and said "if you do nothing else, put eye cream on religiously." No, I didn't buy anything from her :)

To this day, that's exactly what I've done, and at 53 I haven't a line around my eyes. I also started using a regular moisturizer, and as I got closer to 50, switched to Kinerase. It's taken a while, but I've convinced my husband to do the same. He uses the mostly the same products I do.

I've recently tried the new L'Occitane Shea butter facial cream as a night cream (comes with & without SPFs) and was very pleasantly surprised. It hydrates beautifully without leaving your face oily, and best yet, it's got something like 20% shea in it, which I like to call my miracle product.

In any event, stop using plain water, don't use soap, and just get yourself a regular facial cleanser, and eye and face creams. At 27, all you need to do is keep your face moisturized. Just put on a bit more when you're flying.

I'd add that something with SPF is also important for day-to-day use.

the ingredient called Mexoryl (that L'Oreal uses) is not approved by the FDA.

Mexoryl in sunscreen was approved by the FDA in the US years ago. I've bought La Roche Posay Anthelios.....

I use a daily spf moisturizer & eye cream during the day, non-spf cream & eye cream at night. Something a little heavier in the winter - that's the one I tend to try to fly with, but I'll bring samples of whatever if I have them. I love kiehls as well. My husband and I both use the ultimate strength hand salve.

My husband shaves his head - primarily because it's easier to apply daily sunscreen. He likes the Nivea coQ10 after shave balm.....

errr........ I guess I never bothered to recheck the approval status. Well....... when I started using it back it 2002 it was not approved. Strange why I still can't get L'Oreal Ombrelle in the U.S.

see here...... I see that it was eventually approved in 2006.

Yes, I used to buy it overseas as well. But haven't for years.....As for why a certain brand/variety isn't available in the US, have to ask the company that. It's legal - it's probably not economically viable for them to sell here or something like that:rolleyes:

A sleeping pack is great for long hauls. Really helps keep the moisture in, even more so than a cream since it forms a barrier, and looks a little shiny so it isn't as odd looking as a sheet mask.

I find Korean products tend to have a heavier scent. You could try the Taiwanese brand Naruko http://www.naruko.us/category/8_9.aspx as the scent is lighter than a similar ones from The Face Shop and Laneige.

Drinking a lot of water helps.

Kiehl's creme de corps

+1 to the Loccitane.

And I swear by Laneige's water sleeping pack.
If you're currently using a moisturizer daily, see if the same brand has a thicker version of what you're using (e.g. cream, instead of gel)

Does l'occitane shea butter come in unscented? I've had some travel size tubes (love the metal tube!) but the smell annoys me in a small space (eg airplane:td:) I haven't seen them in the outlet store.....

OK, I'll go to their website and try to answer my own questions;)

Hands down, best moisturizer for travelling is the Kiehl's Ultra Facial Creme. Actually, not uncommon to see this as a duty free product when traveling internationally. http://www.kiehls.com/Ultra-Facial-Cream/622,default,pd.html?start=1&cgid=face-moisturizers

Have a few FA who've also commented on how great this is - seems suitable for all skin types.
