Star Alliance - Star alliance transfer IAD to DEN
I have an upcoming transfer at IAD to DEN within Star alliance, although on separate tickets. I'm a Star alliance Gold, and I'm looking for some helpful tips/experience on the transfer. Long time reader here at excellent FlyerTalk, but this is my first post.
I'm coming in on SK from CPH, landing 3 pm on a Thursday. Onward flight is operated by UA and departs 6:54 pm. From what I can see, SK lands at concourse B. I will try to check my bags in all the way to DEN when checking in at CPH to get the tags and boarding passes (unsure if SK and UA has interline agreement though?).
Would appreciate any helpful tips for this transfer such as Gold/"premium" lines for security and generally what to expect. From what I've read here before posting, IAD seems to be a hassle to transfer at from time to time. Hoping that the almost 4 hours will be enough...?
Thanks!

Unless you can get bags tagged to your final destination you will have to clear customs at IAB. Otherwise you can use transfer customs in terminal B. When you check in at CPH show them your second ticket.
At 3pm Dulles has the most CBP agents working the booths, but still it may tak an hour or hour and a half to clear the customs. By that time your bags will be waiting for you in front of the belt.
When you go upstairs (opposite end of int arrival ) you can use Star Gold line to check in and you can use premium lines at security.

Your bag can and will be checked through to DEN at origin.
However, after passing immigration at IAD, you must claim your bag
to clear customs. After customs, you will deposit your bag to continue on
to DEN.
This is standard procedure when connecting in USA, you clear customs
and immigration at first point of landing.

Thanks for the info. Based on previous travels to the US, I was expecting to have to pick up my bags for customs. But getting the tags and bp:s at CPH will save me having to see a UA check-in agent after clearing customs, I assume.

This is incorrect.
While your bags will be tagged to DEN, you will still have to collect them at IAD and go through customs. Just after you pass customs, there will be a place to drop off your luggage if you are connecting to somewhere else.

Thanks, yes, that is exactly what I was saying in that sentence :)
The key at IAD is that if the bags are tagged through then you have to go to the "transfers" line and ride the moon buggy to the proper immigration/customs area. If the SK folks won't tag the bags through then you have to go to the regular arrivals area to immigrate and collect your bags and then check back in.
