That's it? Kind of imitating Qantas there with the ol' font change and little else.

I guess at least it wasn't PowerPoint Clip-Art.

Not totally sure I buy it as a more modern font either

Choice, more over use of the colour black to identify anything related to New Zealand.

Is this really going to make any real difference other than possibly getting a few more likes on Facebook? Will anyone book Air NZ over Qantas or Jetstar as a result?

Oh my, black is the new corporate colour! Black is usually associated with mourning around the world. Is this self awareness about where this airline appears to be heading lately? Hopefully is not the prelude to ......:(

The koru is green, not black! Having a few black planes is terrific but black livery throughout? Depressing!

“Our iconic symbol, the Koru, will remain but it will be set within our national colour rather than the blue and green tones on our tails today"

And just who decided that black should be our national colour? Sorry, Rob Fyfe, you have no right to make such comments.

What is more I think you overestimate the pull of rugby to our potential overseas visitors. How many countries are even vaguely interested in rugby - let alone the total stupidity over the sport displayed by SOME NZers?

You have stated elsewhere your concerns about falling inbound tourism and are blaming NZ tourism. Do you really think this move will turn things around? I, for one, don't think so.

It's as much our national colour as green and gold is Australia's anyway. I don't think it was an inaccurate comment.

Plenty of the countries NZ fly to have an interest in rugby (Australia, Japan, the UK, Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, Canada-particularly Western Canada which NZ fly to), and associate New Zealand with rugby.

LOL I knew I'd press a few buttons here!

But honestly, think about most of Europe (apart from France), the US and China.

And I thought NZ had been trying to promote its clean, green image.

Black - maybe the state of some of our rivers?

Maybe a more controversial discussion than noisy children?

No, it's exactly on topic, as opposed to the other one.

I know black is the colour of death in China. NZ are constantly talking about growing the Chinese market but not surprising really given Rob Fyfe is anti research.

Black is probably cheaper than maintaining the blue/green affair.

If there was a vote, I wouldn't object to black.

Cheers, TK

Yep cheap n tacky, going to be a budget carrier soon.

I think the main cost to the airline is staff wages and fuel. The paint job is pretty low compared to those two just mentioned. :D

It won't make any difference as to whether I fly them (10 abreast 777W and poor other airline earning options will) but that's kinda dull and uninspired. I liked the previous livery, still seen on the 772s.

I'm a bit "meh" on the black tail, but I love the new logo.

Very modern and elegant typeface.

+1

Logo, nice.

Black koru and typeface, meh.

Now, if they adopted the "All Blacks" livery fleet-wide, that would be something to be impressed by!

That's what I was thinking. Still visible on some of the older baggage tag printers (which helpfully use 1980 as the date - for everything) - although it is all in lower case if I recall correctly.

So it doesn't really strike me as a modern typeface at all.

On the whole, meh. I miss the pacific wave since it broke up boring white of the fuselage nicely, but frankly I can't say livery really influences my spending in any way at all.

I recall (donkey's years ago) Air UK introduced a midnight blue tail to their fleet of small aircraft. They quickly revised it to white as apparently it made it hard to see the tail at night/early morning (think about winter de-icing activities - this was the UK pre-global-warming).

I think Royal Jordanian also introduced a black tail but put a colour flash (just checked and it is red) across the top to identify the end of the tail.

It will not influence my purchasing decision but liveries do say something about the company.
To me, it is cheap and uninspiring. I had seen various versions of a new livery that never went ahead as the cost of painting was too expensive, my favourite was a mix between the back wall of the check in desks and the All Black liveries but I was told the blending of th Jade and Navy Blue was too time consuming and took extra paint. So NZ began to take off the Pacific Wave, tails became a straight Navy Blue, new aircraft continued with the blend as it came standard from the manufacturer, and now we have this....Air New Bland.:td:
All this is strange considering Rob's influence on the cabins and latest crew's uniforms. I guess cost cutting now includes boring designs.

Hmmmm. If the airline wants to promote the country, dropping the "air" would do it.;)

Here's some historic Air NZ logos/liveries:

http://andrewjohns151.blogspot.co.uk/2011/03/50-years-in-kiwi-service-boeing-737-200.html

The new typeface is, I guess, a vague throwback to the classic 1980s one - but only due to them both being in italics!

I always liked the NAC colours.... orange must have been a 60s-70s era thing.

Black fails to take off for Air NZ staff
Internal comments from Air New Zealand have revealed some staff take a dim view of the airline's black rebranding.

Threads on the company's KoruNet intranet service showed irritated staff called the national carrier's new livery insane, gloomy and "beyond a joke".

The overhaul from teal to black was announced to staff last month.

Air NZ chief executive Rob Fyfe told staff: "Black is our national colour and it inspires pride in Kiwis."

Employees, who post on KoruNet using first names only, quickly reacted.

Geoff said: "We are not all rugby fanatics! Please give us some sanity in our lives. This rugby thing is getting beyond a joke."

Doug thought adulation of the All Blacks was getting out of hand. "They should go the whole way and put an adidas logo on the tail," he said.

Doug also asked whether an All Black loss at the 2015 Rugby World Cup would trigger another rebranding.

"What is with this obsession with black?" said Catherine.

"There are better ways to get the bank statement back in the black," Ken remarked.

The rebrand on planes appeared to coincide with a compulsory black desktop background for computers, much to Bruce's annoyance.

"It's shameful, gloomy and above all, totally impractical," he said.

Other employees were supportive, or resigned to the overhaul.

Eiao said: "Are we going to look at the background or do what we are paid to do?"

Richard said: "Comments like 'We should have a say' are all well and good, but can you imagine sitting in a room and voting on this?"

An airline spokesman said he didn't know what staff feedback had been like.

"I haven't seen anything on our own internal forums on it."

Fyfe told staff the first re-painted plane would be an ATR72-600 arriving in October.

But he said the plane would be all black, so a new Airbus A320 arriving in June 2013 would be the first with a white body and black tail.

Yawn, the same old anti-rugby tirades. Virtually all of our sports teams wear black or white.

However if the staff think this then no doubt some customers will be too. But will it make any difference to people booking with Air NZ or not, that is the key question.

I agree black is just not the domain of the All Blacks and I can see the reason why NZ has chosen black as so many items associated with NZ are black, look at the new passports.
My issue though is that the new livery is so bland and after showing what can be done with the special "All Black/Crazy about rugby" livery that this really shows the corporate strategy is focused on cost reduction and that tradition has gone out the window.
This was a massively wasted opportunity for the airline and I am surprised by it all, however it will not make me flly any more or less on NZ.
