On US Airways, can you use a boarding pass if someone checks you in online and then scans the boarding pass and emails it to you in PDF format, using a scanner, at the highest resolution possible?

I am trying to help out a relative on an upcoming trip by doing that for the relative, but I am concerned that a scanned boarding pass might not work.

Nothing fraudulent here- it'd be the relative's own boarding pass, used by the relative--just scanned/emailed to the relative, rather than printed out directly by the relative from usairways.com.

Thanks!

Not sure about validity though technically there is no way for them to know but why? If you can access a printer and email why not just check in yourself?

To answer directly - from a technical and (as far as I know but I'm not a lawyer) legal perspective once you have a digital piece of content (the BP) it can be reprinted or duplicated and it's still all the same piece of content. As long as its at a resolution where the barcode is machine readable it should work without issue - if an option I would print to or save as a PDF directly rather than print and scan to eliminate the likelihood of it not being machine readable (dependent on end users printer of course).

Even if it's not machine readable the flyer should be able to get a reprint at the airport without issue as long as it is their BP

Do you have a smartphone? Why not see if mobile boarding passes are an option from your airport...

I don't think there's a difference on how the bar code was generated on the piece of paper, as long as it's valid and matches the traveler's ID.

But I agree, why go to the effort of the person flying has a printer and internet access to get the pdf. Surely OLCI isn't that much more complicated than receiving email, opening attachments, and printing.

You can probably save a few steps and at least the scan by just printing it straight to PDF and emailing that. Cute PDF, for instance, has a free "print to PDF file" printer driver.

Yeah it'll definitely work. I wouldn't even worry too much about the resolution.

That is undoubtedly the best answer, although if the airport your relative is departing from uses the boarding pass scanners decent resolution would be helpful.

But as someone else mentioned, why not do OLCI for your relative and have them get a boarding pass re-printed at the airport ticket counter or kiosk on the day of departure?

Exactly. Great resolution this way.

I frequently print my boarding passes by printing to PDF (I use Primo PDF, an excellent free PDF printer) and then email to a computer with a printer.
