So I have an award flight in Y+ in the next couple of days, I am Diamond MPC and my boarding number is 001.
So whilst I have given myself a good chance of getting an upgrade if the flight is busy - so how do I check how busy Y is?

Oh and when I checked there were only two Y+ seats available when I checked in.

Your best chance is to check if Y is oversold and hope for the best. BTW I wonder what I you are not OPUPed... Life goes on I guess:-)

If you don't have any tool to check seat maps, give us the FLT, date, and origin / destination so we can check it for you.

A diamond and BN1?
I do like your chances. The only way you will not get upgraded is if Y+ is not oversold, or the J section is full.

Y is wide open and J is kind of full at the moment. Good luck.

A busy Y does not necessarily give you an upgrade.
In April I took a flight HKG-NRT - it was an absolutely full B747 and upon boarding there was actually a Q of 10 some people asking the Gate Agent with questions "Was my seat changed?" - I had an overlook at the BP they were holding, looked like all DMs - some wondered if they were upgraded from Y to J and some wondered if they were upgraded from J to F. Answer was disappointing though - F/J/Y were all fully booked, no upgrades.
In June I took a flight LHR-HKG - it was another absolutely full B747 and in the waiting room there was one DM asking the service desk whether there was a change of his seat. Answer: today's flight is completely full and no any empty Economy seat - but no your seat was not changed.
Let's not mention some stories shared in FT that people thought they got upgraded as OLCI indicates they were, then downgraded back to Y upon their airport-check in.
Not to be too sarcastic but this is the answer for your question:
Check at the gate when you scan your BP - if they gave you a new one with a upper class seat number, your chance of being upgraded is 100%, other than that, the chance is 0%. No alternatives. :D
If you are interested at checking ticket stock numbers, please be in mind that also check F/J stock - if they all shows as 0, despite the Y stock also shows 0, you won't get upgraded.
