Some time ago, there was a Press Release announcing EVA Air's inclusion into Star Alliance. When is this supposed to conclude? We do a lot of flights to TPE and it would be great to lock in points for this destination.^

Welcome to Flyertalk! ;)

Apparently somewhen mid-2013, but you are not the first one wondering about this... A search for EVA comes up with:

Does anyone know when Eva Air becomes an active Star Alliance member? (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/star-alliance/1354581-does-anyone-know-when-eva-air-becomes-active-star-alliance-member.html)

BR joins *A tomorrow .. signs MOU (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/star-alliance/1329805-br-joins-tomorrow-signs-mou.html)

EVA * application is in (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/star-alliance/1187314-eva-application.html)

Why in the world does it take so long to join? At this point in time with all the existing alliances it would seem pretty straight forward to me.

I think it's somewhat similar to a merger of sorts, where the airline's own rules and regulations have to be trued up to the Alliance's rules and regulations. The management will also have to tailor and adjust their routes/services to handle things once the "merger" starts. That's why it's helpful to have a regional partner (Air China) that can advise the new member on the tricks of the trade.

Forgot to mention a point that may be even more relevant - EVA has codeshare agreement with AA at this time. They will probably want to wind down that relationship for EVA to join Star Alliance.

A lot of airlines have cross-alliance codeshares, this is quite common in Asia as well as other parts of the world.

Hmm, okay. I stand corrected - forgot that Malaysia Airlines has codeshare agreement with everyone.
