Alright, I wired by son (see previous lost wallet thread) money through Western Union. He went to a bank and probably due to language barrier, they could not figure our what to do. This was a bank by his internship in a a very Chinese speaking (per him) part of town. He says tomorrow he is going to take a Chinese speaker with him and try near his hotel.
He is staying at Howard Johnson Business Club Hotel Shanghai;
No.118 Shimen First Road, Jing'an District, Shanghai 200041, China . Can anyone recommend a good place for him to pick up a wire transfer? Is there any place open extended hours?

When I was 20 (pre Google days), my own mother sent me money to Shanghai via Western Union, and I figured out how to retrieve it short order, in spite of the fact that few people spoke English here back then and my Chinese language abilities were far from stellar. If your son really wants the money, he will devise a means get it, but he might have to take some time off work in order to make this happen. The closest location to his hotel I could find is the following:
AGRICULTURAL BANK OF CHINA1027 CHANGPING RD SHANGHAI
SHANGHAI 200042 (21) 63401572

I happen to live fairly close to your son, and would be happy to lend him money if the Western Union thing doesn't pan out. Send me an email if you require my assistance.

Moondog, that is kind of you- but I think this is something he needs to figure out on his own.

Losing a wallet is a really unpleasant experience anywhere in the world, let alone in China. Having been through this drill myself, whenever it happens to someone else, I try to be helpful.

I was looking to start an interesting discussion board who's domain is still available so I won't be posting it here :P

Looking over this thread again- my son finished his Chinese internship and has been in Germany since August- no panicked emails from him so far! Thanks to all for the help.
