booked HKG-HKT-BKK-FRA-CPH with TG/SK 18.750 DC + aprox 400 Euro cash for business.
now I could book HKG-FRA on CX business for 60.000 AVIOS + 121 Euro cash
Is it worth to burn 41.250 AVIOS for a 280 Euro cash back ?

Up to you really! For a much more direct/quicker/convenient journey, I certainly would :)

id value 40k avios at about £200 (250 euro )so sounds like a break even deal to me. If you are avios rich and cash poor then do it, otherwise Id only do it if you really prefer the routing.

Dont forget you lose £25(30 Euro) for cancelling so you only really get 250Euro back.

You are (overall) worse off if you swap 41,000 Avios for Euro 250. However, knocking 2 flights out of my itinerary and getting onto CX would probably convince me it was a good deal.

Recalling from some of your old posts... which were incidentally much enjoyed :-) bertheike, did you not mention at one point, that you had a problem with miles over 1 million to dispose of? in that case, I wouldn't hesitate to switch to this nice newly available option...

Plus, you might as well start now to get BA and OneWorld used to seeing you on flights :-)

I/we still be rich in DCmiles ( AVIOS now ) aprox 2.5 Mio in 6 accounts.
However I would prever to rebook the old DC booking. which was
......-BKK-HKT-HKG ( rest of old ticket ), and then 2 nights later
HKG-HKT-sopover-BKK-24h-FRA- Z2
but as rebooking is no longer a choice, the only other available option would be this CX flights from HKG to FRA.
I have 4 seats on this, and I think we not have to pay the cancelation fee, as there are timechanges in the old booking.
Normaly I valued DC miles much more than 1 cent per mile, so spending 41 k for 280 Euro never came in my mind, but with AVIOS , Iam not sure how to value them?
Anyhow, we will not change to oneworld, as our flyingpattern ( between Europe/Germany and Asia/Thailand ), is to unconvenient with them.
TG/LH/LX/OS/SK/SQ have much more choice than BA/CX.

There are some good threads on here discussing avios valuation. Raffles I believe makes a strong argument for a .7p valuation per avios. I personally value them slightly less, at .5p. Conversely many people value them more at 1p or up to 1.5p depending on what they use them for.

I am of the option that people by in large overvalue frequent flyer points/miles for most programs as they think of what they get for them without considering how much it actually cost them to acquire the miles or how much the taxes and fuel surcharges can add up.

That said if you are someone who books a lot of last minute travel or who would otherwise pay full cash fare for C or F if you had no miles, then their value is a lot greater. In the end valuation of these things is very personal.

we normaly not have last minute travels, but we like to fly in business and first class. Mostly between Germany and Thailand. But we also not have problems to origin from nearby airports AMS/LON/PAR/ZRH/MXP or even ATH if savings are ok.
So we value a business ticket @ aprox 1.400 - 1600 Euro or a first class tix 2000 - 2300 Euro ++ ( that's what we mostly could buy on LX/LH/TG from Europe to Thailand ).
In this calculation we could say with BD we saved aprox 1000 Euro for 37.500 miles 3 Eurocent per mile.
With AVIOS I would need aprox 135k for a business rt. on BA save 1500 Euro, ( but pay huge taxes , and never have award availability !). Saving would be 1.1 Eurocent.

Well I agree that BMI miles were much more valuable than BA miles.

I dont agree with your valuation of business class or first class flights simply because I would personally never pay 2000 Euro cash for a F return flight on that route. But each to their own. Valuation is completely personal.

In the end valuation of these things is very personal. It seems to me that the most problematic aspect of people's value calculation of miles is to equate them to revenue tickets, often basing themselves of the full flex fare, without putting in a very hefty discount for the much scarcer availability of award inventory.
