Question, is it worth to upgrade to Magnifica from Classica on 767 from FCO - ORD ?

I am travelling with my son and dreading the return flight. Would you pay $600-$800 for upgrade to business seat and entertainment system ?

Is it possible to ask for an upgrade just for the transatlantic flight ? one segment out of 4. (USA - Middle East)

Is it old and not worth the money ? Not comfortable, waste of money. I don't care for the food, I am gluten free and the food on any airline for gluten free is bland.

I still need to call tomorrow and check when the call center opens in the US but wanted to get some feedback from everyone.

Last year there was a special on business class upgrades for $500 in August this year it does not seem that it is being offered.

Thanks,

Erez

First you should call AZ if you haven't done so to know exactly what your situation is. Some tickets can't actually be upgraded and reissued at all (some tickets disallow booking class change to avoid people being 'clever' and rebooking a non-refundable ticket into a refundable one to then cancel it for instance), or you may find that upgrading one way to business class is what you thought or much more, or indeed, sometimes, that it may be cheaper to upgrade the whole trip (not all buckets are compatible so they may need to upgrade your economy leg too which can be expensive). Basically, if there is no special offer it will almost always be cheaper to upgrade the full one way rather than one leg.

767 has indeed one of the older J seats as compared to the renovated 772 or 332 so if you compare to that, then yes of course, you'll find it 'old', but then, similarly, if you compare to Y there is plenty more room and it is far more comfortable to sleep. Food is great (if your son cares) but as you say you cannot make use of it that admittedly kills the point. Last point, the 767 is one of those planes where the two of you can be neighbourless in economy as well as it is a 2x3x2 configuration.

Called alitalia and the far difference is huge plus a huge change fee. Cheaper to buy business in another airline and scrap this ticket.

Will not do it, but worth while checking I guess.

Will bring for the kid laptop and kindle fire for entertaiment. Hopefully this will be enough.

Honestly, if its not the updated version of business, Im not sure its worth it. I would go on BA for roughly the same price. Far better product.

BA's CW seat is indeed better than the old AZ J seat. However, I find AZ a much better product than BA otherwise. The new seat is better than CW, and most everything else (food, toiletry bags, duvet and pillows, etc) is much nicer on AZ than BA except lounges and wine.
