Tried the multi city option in mid September for the segments you posted but couldn't get that fare. What dates does it work?

Couldn't resist. Need to go to DC to examine a bank witness in deposition. So I booked SFO-PIT OW red eye for $70 then Megabus to DC for $5.00. I get to see the southern Pennsylvania countryside during the daylight and arrive DC at a decent hour.
Need to book a $150 OW from DCA return, however, as the reverse eats up too much time.
For everyone going to PIT and heading out from there, check out Megabus for transportation to NYC, DC, Philadelphia and more. $1-5.00. (I don't know who is subsidizing this). Never been on it but the forums say its ok.

Hi,
My first post on FT as well as my first kinda-sorta MR run.
Iv booked LAX-JFK-PIT on one booking and PIT-ATL-LAX on another for a total of $140. I did that since I might end up not doing the JFK-PIT on the first leg. Is this doable? I believe if this was all one reservation, my return journey could be cancelled if I did not show up for the JFK-PIT leg.
Advice and/or suggestions please?

Yes, you are wise to book as two one-ways for exactly the reason you state.
By the way, if Delta later does a schedule change to the first one-way that makes you miss the start of your second one-way, just call reservations. They will fix it at no charge even though you booked them separately.

Starting in PIT from DTW is the wrong approach. o/w DTW-SJC is $136 on DL/UA/AA. Same day confirm to co-terminal SFO and start in SFO. Pick a SFO-PIT return that connects in DTW.

No. The fare is PIT-SFO/LAX. Why would it work from DTW?
That being said, I indicated an economical way to get to SFO from DTW that is likely cheaper than any option to position to PIT by air.

What (I think) Geoffco suggest is the least cost flight option. Essentially, instead of you driving from DTW to PIT, you fly to SJO and get miles. However, getting from SJO to SFO is another consideration.
I spent hours last night trying to figure it out as well, trying to force a round trip/multi-city run that would end at PIT to trigger the discount. Unfortunately, no luck. It seems to me that the fare must involve PIT in the beginning/end connecting with SFO/LAX/DEN.
I was able to get a route that includes DTW coming home, which I guess I can skip the last leg to PIT and be home in DTW. However, getting from DTW-PIT in the first place is problematic.
Driving from my home (north of Detroit) to PIT takes 5 leisurely hours (Each way x 300 miles) and ~$160 of gas and tolls(Return). It takes me 1 hour to get from home to DTW each way. If someone can point me to a more economic solution, I'm all ears...
Anyway, after searching for hours trying to put together a makeshift mini vacation near labor day weekend, I ended up booking my first pure MR -
Sept 8 - PIT-JFK-SFO, 3 hours at SFO, then SFO-JFK-PIT (red eye). Out the door price is $139. After my diamond bonus, I'll be earning 6172 MQM miles and 13888 RDM miles. Total estimated cost = $139(airfare) + $160(gas) + $10 parking = $300. Cost per RDM mile = $0.022.

Booked my first mileage run using this since the JFK-BUR one isn't pricing anymore under $300.
Had to get a positioning flight from NYC-PIT for $130, which bumps up my CPM to a little over $0.04, but I'm ok with that since I need the mileage to renew GM.
JFK-PIT-DTW-LAX-CVG-PIT-LGA with a day at home with the parents
I should be able to do SDC's day of flight right? I'd like to do PIT-DTW-ATL-LAX, which would get me to LA potentially 4 hrs earlier than what was available for T fares and bump up the MQM by about 500.

I'm interested in hearing about SDC stregties as well, since this is a pure MR for me, I want to maximize miles... so if I can somehow add more legs to my PIT-JFK-SFO-JFK-PIT, I'm all ears. I've only done a reroute SDC once and I think the agent bent the rules for me. I was flying on an 11AM SFO-JFK direct, and saw that there was a 8AM SFO-LAX. I was hoping to reroute the flight to go to LA for a few hours and grab lunch with my parents. I called at 5AM, and successfully changed it to SFO-LAX-JFK with a 6-hr layover (returning flight to NYC on the 4PM direct). I've SDC'd to earlier flights many times though just by asking the gate agent for the flight I want nicely.

Leave Sun 9/2 1:40am: LAX-MEM-PIT-ATL-RDU (arrive 9:00pm)
$325 RT. You can’t beat that. $.054 but not great but not horrible, I mean, for 8 segments, 6544 MQM, and less than 48 hours of my time, on a holiday weekend where I had no other plans yet anyway!

Saw the post title last night, misread the price as o/w and not r/t. The price just seemed too low to be r/t.
DL has been slashing prices in/around Ohio airports. LAX-CLE/CAK/CMH/PIT has been hovering around $230-250, but $140 is a great steal. Congrats to all who got in on it!

thanks for posting this. i got a wknd in PIT in August (though may drive to CMH to visit friends) and I then a cobbled together a NY trip in December for $195 a/i.
Got a $69 one way to PIT through JFK. then found a one way back from LGA (also through PIT) on Expedia for $127. must have been related to this fare, as its now gone from Expedia and lowest LGA-SFO one way is $200, and no results through PIT show up at all.
thanks again to the original poster. ^

This was a plain attack at UA hubs... UA has nonstop flights out of PIT to LAX/SFO/DEN, so DL was just dumping fares on legacy UA routes. It was not a mistake.

The airport bus [28X] runs every 30 minutes and the fare is only $3.75 one way. You can go to the Robinson mall [about 15 minutes on the bus from the airport] if you are just doing a couple hours in PIT. The bus also goes to Downtown and Oakland area [U of Pitt/CMU], which takes about 40 minutes.
Things to do: Carnegie Science Museum, National Aviary, Heinz Factory Museum, Phipps Arboretum, stroll in SouthSide [Carson St.], Take the incline from Station Square up Mt. Washington for some grand views of downtown Pittsburgh, Shop in Strip District, etc.

If my SDC's don't work out and I end up having a long layover in PIT, I plan to head into the city and get a Primanti Bros. sandwich. :)

I didn't say it was a mistake, but I was challenging the notion that we see these "all the time." Sure, Delta attacks UA hubs all the time, but there has not been such a low CPM in quite a while.

There's a Primanti Bros. near the airport (https://plus.google.com/109306538712891917024/about), FYI.

You might want to catch steelers/penguins game if your date of travel matches with their schedule. Although the ticket prices for steelers game is a bit pricey.

Nice job. I got a LAX-JFK-PIT too and am trying to find a cheap way back from NYC. No luck so far.

Only in your dreams. Obviously you don't know how this predatory pricing scheme works. Another recent one I saw was IAH-ANC for very cheap with DL. Then UA offered DTW and MSP to ANC for the same price. UA was not going to match DL from their own hubs, but from DL's hubs.

It was around for about 12 hours.
I tried to compute how they could have messed up and concluded it is almost impossible...
The fare was $45 one way... They did not miss a zero, maybe fat fingered the "4" when it should have been a 9 or something...
But, I think this was an intentional quick attack at UA by DL. Those kind of fare dumps normally last several hours to a day, a little longer if competitors match.

Haha yep. At $95 OW, the all in fare would be around $229, so fat finger or not, this was a simple attack at UA. AA recently had $209 or $219 for PIT-LAX/SFO, so maybe they are competing for the PIT market.

No mistake. It was an attack against UA hubs. It was a very low fare, but it was designed to get their attention. It was released around 5pm Pacific, and pulled by 7am Pacific, so the amount of true revenue impact it could have had to people legitimately buying in those markets was minimal.
Plus it was in T space which is their loss leader bucket anyway. They intend not to make that much on T fares, this was just a bit lower than usual (about $100 off a typical RT transcon fare sale).

Could have always missed a 1 at the beginning. Perhaps keyed it in as 045 instead of 145. That is relatively easy to do on a number pad.

Delta is getting back at United for putting needles in their sandwiches.
I got a trip to San Juan out of a short business trip to DC: SFO-PIT $69.00. PIT-DC $5.00 Bus DCA-SJU $114.00 SJU-SFO $203.00
