My father recently passed away and he was an avid CX flyer. Always flew CX between YVR & HKG 6-8 times a year.

While going through his possessions today, I came across a gold coloured CX coin. Can't seem to find any information on the net, so was wondering if anyone knew what it is?

I know it's not worth anything, but just wondering what they were used for.

The coin is less than an inch and a half in diameter with 'Cathay Pacific Airways' and an airplane above some clouds embossed on one side. On the flip side, its the same thing except instead of an airplane, it says 'Arrive In Better Shape'.

I'm a recent frequent flyer to CX (2008), so I have no idea what this is or what it was used for.

Thanks!

Sorry to hear about your dad.

Do you know if he was a million miler (MM) with CX? There are conflicting reports as to whether you receive some sort of gift for hitting 1MM, but check out this thread for more information: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/cathay-pacific-asia-miles/1114040-cx-mpc-do-they-care-about-lifetime-miles.html

Could you post a photo of it?

Maybe they used it to flip for who gets to land the plane.

I don't think he ever hit the million mile mark.

All I know is that the phrase "Arrive in better shape" was also used on amenity kits - I have an eyemask with that same slogan on it. Apparently it points to the late 1980s period. Sorry, can't help with the coin though.

That plane is a 747-400 which was announced (by Boeing) at the end of 1985. Cathay Pacific was an early customer but they didn't enter service until around 1988 or 1989, IIRC. So that seems to line up with the slogan on your eyemask. Just another data point, maybe it will help jog FT's collective memory.

Of course someone in the coin-making department could have made it earlier than the service date just to show off the latest model.
