Checkpoints and Borders Policy Debate - TSA uniforms made in Mexico?
This letter to the editor states that the TSA uniforms are made in Mexico. After such an uproar about the Olympic uniforms, is this going to get traction?
http://blog.syracuse.com/opinion/2012/07/why_are_uniforms_for_tsa_made.html
"...Why excoriate a private enterprise using private funds over an issue that the government refuses to address about its own contracts? If they are having trouble finding a made-in-USA source, let them call me; I know a few wonderful manufacturers in Tennessee who would love the contract. The government spent $98 million on the initial purchase of the new uniform program in 2010 and purchases replacements every year..."
Maybe those TN factories need better lobbyists!

A few years ago a Customs inspector found Custom patches that were coming into the country. They were seized due to the by America act. I wonder if that is still in effect. I had understood the Border Patrol uniforms were made in Mexico. I think that has ended by now. Due to the same act. That is why Govt. employees can't fly foreign airlines unless they are a codeshare,
Olympic athletes represent the very best of the USA, and we want to be proud of everything related to them.
I do not believe that the same is true of the TSA.

Shouldn't be hard for the cartels to pick up some TSA uniforms to go with their other costumes, then.

Heck the cartels have enough billions to start a legitimate clothing factory in Mexico and then deliberately underbid the whole world to get the ICE uniform contract, so they can make themselves a few genuine uniforms to aid their mules in their "importation" duties.

TSA uniforms made in Mexico?
Yes, this tends to irritate some of us as well.
But if you stop and think about it for a minute, if the TSA is able to get the uniforms cheaper there than here then is not TSA saving YOU money?

If saving money were the real motive, they wouldn't be buying LEO costumes in the first place.

So it's Chertoff or Soros that has to have some interest in VF Imagewear.
With $98M flushed down the toilet for new uniforms, my guess is some big shot cashed in, and this truly wasn't to "enhance the professional image," of their screeners.
One of the number one violations of screeners Management Directives is a uniform violation. So this agency is big on supporting Mexican manufacturing.
When government agencies buy uniforms from Mexico, the terrorists win.

Kind of like Target lets their employee's wear any kind of red shirt. Why can't the TSA just wear any kind of blue shirt? It would help people to realize they aren't really any kind of authority figure.

It'd be even more helpful if the shirts were brown.

Our first uniform shirts were made in Mexico as well as our pants. Our belts were proudly made in Canada. Shoes were Rocky's made in USA and the thermal sox were also US.
Missed the 2nd rollout but the smurf uniforms were not made in the US. They were contracted by VF Solutions, parent to Lee, Chic, Vanity Fair, Jansport, and numerous other clothing lines. 2nd rollout also did not include shoes or socks. Those you provided your self either by using your uniform supplement or your cash.
I don't remember one piece of uniform piece that was ever US Made.
[sarcasm] Made me so proud to be an exit sitter.[ /sarcasm]

is not TSA saving YOU money?
Outlawing all spending on "honor guard" type getups and any spending on LEO-imitation gold plated tin badges will be the first items TSA can cut out of their budget if they are serious on cutting wasteful spending. ^
I will be thrilled to see you lead the internal employee campaign to get your management to save the taxpayers from these totally unnecessary wastes of money. Thank you in advance.

Something so un-American as the TSA, wearing non-American clothing? Surprised?

Pleasantly so. Highly appropriate for an un-American agency to wear clothing manufactured outside the country.
