View Full Version : Drumsticks through security?

This is about the musical instrument, not chicken.

I have a portable drum pad and drumsticks that I want to bring on my trip. They fit very comfortably in my carryon. Many websites talk about airlines or TSA allowing musical instruments but there are exceptions and caveats. Drumsticks are not much of a weapon but that's just my opinion. Does anyone gave any experience actually bringing drumsticks through security?

Checked baggage is an undesirable option on this trip. For reference the airlines are AA connecting to BA domestic at LHR, so I need to go through both US and UK checkpoints.

No more of a weapon than large knitting needles, which are allowed; but logic has nothing to do with the way the TSA operates.

Get a ball of yarn to play with. You could make a nice scarf very quickly with such big knitting needles ;-)

I can't speak about drumsticks specifically, but most TSOs and other airport security officers have NO IDEA what can and can't be used as a weapon.

Ask any convict what they can do with a toothbrush or the elastic out of a pair of underwear and a cigarette lighter.

Ask any SEAL, SAS, Delta, ext member what kind of improvised weaponry can be found/made on an average commercial aircraft and you'd be amazed at their response....

I a not a trained SEAL but at a distance of 5 feet you attack me with a drumstick and I'll defend myself with my laptop and the charging transformer swinging on the cord and I would not want to be you. Yet TSA lets 80% of the pax board a plane with these most excellent weapons.

I've taken hundreds of flights, including through LHR, with a practice pad and drum sticks in my carry on. Never had a single problem.

Thanks! Hopefully we won't become the rare exception to the rule.

Humorous anecdote - a music student (brother of a friend) told me once that he tried to bring a large instrument on board; this was about 30 years ago, it might have been a cello, this was back when there was more usable closet space. He told the GA that it was a musical instrument and when asked what it was, he replied "oboe." The GA looked it up on some list and let him on the plane with the instrument.
