Cathay Pacific Asia Miles - First Class lounge at HKG for dinner

I'm flying F out of HKG in a few days with a friend who will be in J.
The flight leaves just after midnight so we're interested in having dinner at the airport- is The Haven at The Pier a better choice than the temporary F section in The Wing for a proper sit-down dinner? (Or should we consider The Cabin as well?)
I know that the renovated Wing is generally a better place to be, but I'm only interested in the food and the dining area for now. I was in the J area of The Wing a few weeks ago and wasn't particularly impressed by the food offerings.
If we go to The Pier we'd head over to The Wing after dinner anyways since The Pier closes before the flight departs.
Distance from the gate isn't an issue as we'll be there many hours in advance and I'd probably need to burn off a bit of that food before stuffing myself again on-board.
I did read the FAQ but it doesn't touch on the food offerings at the temporary F section of The Wing, so I'm not sure whether or not it's still the same food as in The Pier.
Thanks :)

Have you looked at cx site lately.
It was my understanding that the Wing is undergoing renovations right now and will not open until December (last time I checked)
So that solves your problem of just going to the pier.

The Wing (First Class) is still undergoing renovation, but they've blocked off a section of the newly renovated J area (The Atrium iirc) for F if I'm not mistaken.

Toto the pier for a proper dinner, but it is over at gate 63
If you have time and don't mind the walk, then the pier is the best choice. They have an actual dining area where servers will bring you drinks, ect.
I wasn't paying attention last time I was in the renovated wing as to if they had a dining area or not.

Thanks- am leaning towards making the trek over to the Pier now.
I'm still curious about how the F section at the Wing is, and does anyone have a comparison with the Cabin's food? Is it just light snacks there?

The is basically nothing there except some [old] chairs and staff to fetch drinks. For food selection you need to head over to the Wing J section most times of day. If I have a flight at the low-numbered gates I just go to the renovated J section.

The F Pier is the only option. But do not expect anything grand. CX has no dedicated lounge for F pax, so the lounge is full of OW Emeralds. Catering is a small hot/cold buffet and the food does not change much. You can order some noodle soup and some simple other food. The wine list is very poor, well below what you get onboard. Food onboard is better too.
The F Pier lounge gets very crowded in the evening (as it is the only one), hard to get a seat, hard to get service or newspaper. They are just unable to cope with the number of pax.

Thank you!
The Pier it is then. Is it worth visiting the Cabin as well?

If you are walking down instead of catching the shuttle train, you might as well make it your mid-way pit stop for a smoothie/fruit juice.

Thank you- that'll depend on how much time I have after the stop at the Pier.
Based on the comments (that the Pier's buffet is small), I'll probably be out of there fairly quickly :p

Everything is relative....yes it's small compared to a hotel buffet. But compared to other Airline lounges? I don't think I've come across an airline lounge that is much better catering-wise than the F lounge, except for the QF F SYD lounge.

Glad to hear that. I take it that there's more to choose from than the J selection at the Wing?
By QF F lounge, are you referring to the HKG location or one at their Australian bases?

Sorry I was referring to the QF F lounge in SYD (or MEL).
I think there is more selection of food at the Pier F lounge than the J Wing.

At The Haven right now. Lots of food and very quiet... maybe everyone's already finished? :p Will have to trek all the way back later since my flight departs from the gate right across from the Wing though. Definitely more food than the Wing J section so thanks for the tip, sxc.
No buggy voucher or anything, but the polite but not particularly friendly F check in agent let my one extra piece of baggage be checked without any extra fees so I'm happy about that.

Just pay HKD 60 if you feel needed..., for me money well spent.....

In case you are not aware of, you can ask for food not in the F buffet, e.g, food in the J lounge and sometimes more.
Unfortunately, I think that buggy vouchers are only given to DMs traveling to higher numbered gates. :(

I've never found any food in the J lounge that warrants a special order compared to the F offering - and yes I'm including the noodles.

Nah, I don't mind the walking. I'd pay for the service if I had more carryon baggage with me but I only have one piece today.
I only wanted to try out the buggies for the novelty, not so much out of necessity :)

Yeah, the server told me that. I wasn't particularly interested in the noodles as I'd already tried them out last time.
The check in agent didn't say anything about the DM requirement, just that it was necessary for the flight to depart from Gate 40+ to be eligible. Either way I didn't get one haha
At The Wing now. The only difference from the J section is that it's a little bit quieter (less people) and there are waiters to get you drinks. Slightly disappointing but I wasn't expecting anything more.

EFA. Yes back in the days when I was DM I only go for breakfast. The only things I like were the bircher muesli and the freshly squeezed OJ, although the latter is long gone now. :(

I suspect I'm in the minority, but I prefer eating in the renovated J section of the Wing to dining in the F section of the Pier.

Why?I like the openness of the Wing much more than the relatively claustrophobic feel of the Pier. I also am perfectly happy helping myself rather than being served in the first class faux restaurant setting, and find the offerings in the J section more than adequate.

+1. I really fail to see the obsession with the Pier (and the old Haven's) below-average buffet food and setting.

4-5 years ago, we ordered tom kha gai (or perhaps tom yum gai - I forgot) in Wing F. It was very good. I never got that again. This is what I meant, not just the noodles in J.
