Star Alliance - Am I crazy? AA/SQ from ORD to MNL

So I'm looking at some business travel from ORD->MNL in the next few months, and I'm seeing this route:

(flying AA) ORD->IAH (then SQ) IAH->DME->SIN->MNL

Return flights reverse this sequence.

Setting aside that my wife might kill me for the duration of time away, I'm intrigued by the opportunity to earn about 24k *A miles (seems like a good one-shot to *A Gold on A3). Am I nuts for thinking this is a good idea? I've not flown SQ before, and hear they're wonderful, but I will be traveling on an economy-class ticket. I also currently don't have status with anyone, so upgrades seem unlikely.

Also, can I use my AA (or other OW carrier) FF# for the ORD->IAH leg and a *A FF for the SQ segments?

SQ is famous for earning ZERO EQMs on low fares :eek:

As far as lounge access goes, better post in the various airline fora to see if someone can guest you into a club.

BTW, noticed yesterday that United has a sub 1K fare to MNL from Dallas (thinking of visiting for Thanksgiving) for almost 20K EQM :) That would of course be about 4K less miles, but methinks cheaper.

Just purchased DFW-MNL for $950 all in for November. Goes via HNL, not NRT, and gets about 19 K EQM. Not sure if it's available for too many other dates, and includes a leg on 764, which has no exit row seats :mad:

All I can do is hope that by November they will sub it for a 777 or it will be retrofitted with E+

If *A Gold on A3 is what you want I would say it´s perfectly sane. I did a MR last year GRU-LIS-OPO-LIS-GRU in J just to get *A Gold till end of 2015.

It's what I'll do if I can determine the fare code for the flight I'm seeing on Orbitz and if it's a status mile-earning code. Does anyone know how to find fare codes on Orbitz apart from calling them and badgering them?
