Cathay Pacific Asia Miles - Best way to score an upgrade with MPC?

What is usually the procedure to try and score an update to Business Class? Currently I'm in Economy with a MPC-Green.

Who would I need to ask, to see if theirs an extra spot or two? :)

Also is it better to check in online or check in at the counter and ask? Or does it really not matter?

You do not ask CX for an UG. CX only op-up PAX if the lower cabin is oversold, even if you were a DM. OLCI does improve your chance, but as a GR op-up can only happen in limited routes.

And as you are a GR member, there are thousands of elite who have priority over you for op-ups.

As a general thumb of rule: you get what you paid. Dont expect too much, especially while you are on CX/KA.

Best way to score an upgrade is to refund n buy up, next best is pay difference by cash or miles.
Then its being a dm and buy enough Y tix w other names so that its full out.

If ure any lower then go back to suggestion #1

Your suggestion #1 and #2 are practical and in most cases (depends on inventory and if you are allowed to pay the difference by cash/miles) OP will be very likely to score an upgrade. :D

However suggestion #3 - in case OP becomes a DM and buy enough Y tix with other names to make that flight oversold, if none of these "other name" shows up and in fact occupying all the Y cabin, OP would still end up sitting in Y.

There have been anecdotal reports of people being upgraded if they're traveling on their birthday. Wouldn't hold my breath, though.

Well, good luck. It is already hard as it is for GR on normal situations.. this year is even harder due to the market being flooded by fake golds and fake diamonds from AMEX promo.

so your chances these year as a GR is close to nil.

next year might be better when those fake DM and golds expire... well.. except for those permanent fake golds from selected countries

Wouldn't worry about those myself. If they change their flying to CX, then they may qualify for DM (or perhaps gold) in their own rights anyway. If they don't fly frequently enough, you probably won't see them on your flight anyway.

Chances of an op-up as a GR are close to nil, AMEX GO/DM there or not. Heck, chances of an op-up are fairly low on CX anyways.

I don't know why people are so concerned about them. The chances of there being one on your flight is fairly low (the market is not getting flooded by them- it seems like a hidden benefit so many eligible cardholders don't even know about it) and the chances of one getting an op-up which should have gone to you is even lower.

In case you're wondering... I do have an amex plat, but it's Hong Kong issued and AMEX HK do not offer this benefit. I earned GO by having my butt firmly planted in a CX seat.

They offered DM to HK Centurion card holders.

I meant that they don't offer GO to Plats. I wouldn't know about Cent, I never did find it worth all that much more than Platinum.

oh, just like that "other" international credit card chain that offers unlimited complementary lounge access for the cardholder on many airports worldwide (almost at par with priority pass) regardless of what airline you are flying, that many cardholders don't even know about it.

I bypassed my CX J lounge access in DXB as this card offered an access to an F lounge there. And was also able to enter the CX lounge in SIN even when flying SQ last April.

My mom is a cardholder for more than 30 years already and she doesn't even know about the lounge access thing until I told her. :D

Those bookings are likely cancelled several days before departure.
