Any reason to use Quantas first lounge or the Pier F is much better?

I would stick with Cathay lounges. Pier is fine - it has "old and classic" personality; some others are more funky. Wings F is under construction, but they have something rigged in the Business lounge - nice enough. And there are a couple others. QF lounge is at an odd kind of location. It was closed when I went to check and I wasn't inspired to return. However, if you have time, hop around and try a few. That is part of the fun. I didn't realize there was a difference between Pier and Wing. The wing has a temporary seating area for F but that's it (I imagine it will be fabulous when it is completed). I was very let down with the scotch when I was there (JW red and I cannnot palate that) 3 weeks ago (and I did not have time to go a cross the terminal to the pier). As I was running to my BA flight I noticed the Quantas lounges but did not have time to sample. I actually went first to the cabin seemed really cool but I needed a shower and so had to head back to the wing. I have no idea how much time I will have but if enough will try the pier with a short stop at quantas F near the BA gates Himeno Jul 14, 12, 12:30 am QF lounge is at an odd kind of location. It was closed when I went to check and I wasn't inspired to return. The Qantas lounge is near Gate 15, to the right after departure immigration. It is near the gates which Qantas flights typically use. The Qantas lounge is open 0500-2359, although the F section is closed between 1000 and 1600. The lounges are also in the middle of a refurbishment. brenc3 Jul 14, 12, 3:35 am I rather like the QF lounges. The F side is usually less crowded and has room to spread out, with a few nibbles and (IMO) better wine than he CX F lounge. When I want a good meal I go to CX F, but when I just want to sit with a glass of wine I go to QF. The J lounge is not bad also. During the times that the F lounge is closed, the J lounge is usually empty. armagebedar Jul 14, 12, 6:17 am I'm in the QF F lounge now, and it's quite nice -- quiet, sparsely populated, decent nibbles and bev. Afterwards I think I'll pop in over to the CX F lounges (or lounge and a half) for a comparison. JALPak Jul 14, 12, 6:45 pm I personally prefer QF lounges over CX's because it's much more relaxing compared to a packed CX lounge. Well of course unless you get the cabana in the Wing which is under renovation or day-break room in the Pier which is quite far away and you need to walk back to the lower number gates as there's no train to get you back. If you want food, QF lounge doesn't offer much and you probably would want to go to CX's. moa999 Jul 14, 12, 7:48 pm QF lounge is at an odd kind of location. They are both in roughly the same location on opposite sides. aktchi Jul 14, 12, 8:32 pm And the Wing isnt in an odd location then??? They are both in roughly the same location on opposite sides. Yes the Wing's location is also kind of odd. :) I didn't focus on it as the F was closed due to renovation. Re QF, I realize that I only saw it shuttered and dark. Anyway, one important aspect of lounge selection, crowding, cannot be judged in abstract as it would change with the ebb and flow of flights. In some airports like HKG we are fortunate to have several options. I would look at a few and, if I had to choose, probably pick a less crowded lounge with fewer amenities than a crowded one with superior amenities. Of course, if I have enough time and don't have to choose, I would move around mixing and matching the best features of each, e.g., food, computers, showers, or just plain quiet atmosphere. jake66 Jul 14, 12, 8:40 pm In the temporary First class section of the Wing, is there extra food/drinks that are better (or at least different) than what J passengers have access to? Also, how long does it actually take to walk from the Wing lounge across the terminal to Pier? I have a three hour layover next week and I'd like to check out both lounges if I have time (this is my first time at HKG). I think my flight will take off near the Wing lounge. aktchi Jul 14, 12, 8:42 pm Also, how long does it actually take to walk from the Wing lounge across the terminal to Pier? Three hour layover probably translates as two hours of true terminal time. That is enough time to sample both lounges. Honest "walking" will take longer, but if you walk on the moving walkways, I would guess maybe 10 minutes. I would visit Pier first and Wing (closest to departure gate) the last. In between there is also Cabin. jake66 Jul 14, 12, 9:11 pm Three hour layover probably translates as two hours of true terminal time. That is enough time to sample both lounges. They are both in roughly the same location on opposite sides. While both the First lounges are in 'odd locations', it is far easier to access the Wing than the QF First Lounge. The real pain is that most QF flights leave from gates located to the North of the First lounge and to access them, one needs to head a considerable distance South before heading down and coming back up North on the lower level, passing the QF First lounge overhead as you do. aktchi Jul 14, 12, 10:19 pm Oh OK, thanks for the suggestion! 10 minutes isn't bad. I think I will check out all three lounges then! I didn't time it, and I also tend to walk fast with good walking shoes, so please do time your own initial walk and use that as a guide for return. You should get at least 30 minutes in each of the three lounges. (HKG is spread out and good walking shoes will help you enjoy it more comfortably.) ETA: Forgot about the People Mover mentioned by serfty. Definitely include it in your plans, just to add to the experience. Here is a map of the terminal: http://www.ifly.com/hong-kong-international-airport/terminal-map Wing is by gate #2. Cabin is by gate #23. Pier's First Class entrance is by gate #63; Business entrance by #65. You probably won't have time for more, but Qantas First is by gate #15 on the upper floor. Enjoy as many as you can and do come back with a report! serfty Jul 14, 12, 10:35 pm You can use the "People Mover" to get from the Wing (Low numbered gates) to the Pier (High Numbered gates) but will need to walk and use the travelators to go the other way. |
