I just got it too. By my math, it's a slightly better value than purchasing the points via the "Cash & Points then cancelling" trick ($143.75 for 25k points vs. $150).

Max of 50k points/year though.

I will probably pick up 50k to top off, as it's pretty easy to find 25k reward nights that are worth more than $143.75, but it's kind of a "meh" offer compared to the cash/points trick that is always available.

I calculate that under this offer 10,000 points cost USD67.50, which is a 3.6% discount from the USD70 that they now charge on the points+cash deal.

76toPHL
Jul 13, 12, 7:58 am
You can book a 25k night award redemption for 15k + $70 using "cash and points" then immediately cancel it. PC keeps the $70 and gives you the 10k points back in addition to the 15k you had already.

So it nets out to being able to buy 10k points for $70, (0.7 cents/point). This deal is to buy them at 0.575 cents/point, assuming you buy 26k or more.

Cash and points used to be 15k + $60, it just recently went up to 15k + $70, which makes this buying points thing a marginally better deal I guess.

If you buy 50k (+50k bonus) it's 57.50, which isn't a bad deal.

how did you arrive at 143.75 and 150.00 for 25K points respectively?

using this promotion, you would have to 13,000 pts @ 12.50/1k pts = 162.50
add the 13,000 matching bonus. you would get 26,000 pts for 162.50.

Using the cash/points trick. you would have to do 10,000 twice at 70.00 a pop. and 5,000 pts once at 40.00 a pop. therefore 25,000 pts would be 180.00.

not good for a regular award night redemption rate at most properties, but it would be great for point breaks.

Bad calculations, sorry. Buying points (more than 26k at the lowest rate) is 0.575 cents/point using this offer, vs. 0.7 cents/point with the C&P cancellation trick.

I've had no problems getting decent savings using purchased points over cash stays, but I usually selectively book during peak/high-rate periods, for example:
Ocean City, MD this past 4th of July weekend. 4 nights @ 25k points that cost me $150/night, no tax vs. room rates in the high 200's/low 300's + tax.

Also, booking a room in Miami Beach during Winter Music Conference in March. Room rates at the Z-hotel at 14th/Collins are $430+tax, 25k awards available from this offer would be $143.75 (no tax).

So I guess it depends on how you are using them, but for hotels that are in high demand periods, it's always been a great deal for me.

Unless I'm not doing the math properly, 50,000 points @ $11.50 per 1,000 points= 50,000 points for $575.

That means that a "free" night at an IC will cost cost between $345-$575 (30,000-50,000 points) if done with purchased points at the cheapest rate. Not much of a bargain except for the 100% bonus which brings the price down to $172.50-287.50 if you stay two nights. Good value at some places but not at others.

Under this promotion buying a minimum of 26,000 points, that would make it $28.75 for 5,000 points which will get you a nights stay under PointBreaks. I went in and it offered up to 100k to me for 575 dollars ( i do 300k points per year from stays )

its really dependant on which hotels you stay. As someone mentioned if you like Holiday Inn Manhattan which is 25k per night or 400 dollars a night and you need 4 nights, then its 1600 dollars or 575 dollars for same stay.

then again if you like holiday inns that cost $100 per night and are 25k then this isnt so interesting for you.

Mrs 21H21J got the email. With her login I see the 50k+50k for $575, with my log in it's a straight 50k for $575. We're both platinum, but I have far more activity on my account so far this year.

I'm on the the fence if I should to go for this as I always use Cash + points for award bookings. This would save $125 overall, but at the cost of pre-paying $575 when I (relatively points rich, 400k) and do not have any planned redemption until summer 2013.

I think post #29 (by H21J21) gave a pretty good indication that if your account wasn't targeted, you probably won't get the bonus.

I was seriously thinking about this offer, but then, I'm sitting on over 300K points, and this year, I've only spent ~150K. With my travel habits, and all the promotions, its hard to justify spending 20K-25K (worth ~$150 to $200 for me) on a ICH hotel room when I can usually find a better deal paying cash (at ICH or with other local hotels), so 90% of my points redemption had been on point breakers (for myself and for family/friends). At the rate of earning and redemption, it would take me several years to drain my account... we all know the value of points only go down...

I wouldn't dare to buy it even if they said they will credit you the point manually afterwards.

The problem with calling is that there is no proof whatsoever, it's your words against theirs.

Also I think PC IT system can't handle 'exceptions'.

However if anyone who got it to work, I'd be happy to know ;)

Exactly, last mid-Dec I wrote to them to ask for a status match. I had no idea that IHG reset all status to 0 on Jan 1. I got an email saying they will match me until Dec 2014, so I thought 'awesome'. Then on Jan 1, I was at club level again, and of course I wrote to them.

First reply: Sorry I think it's a mistake - the status should be Plat and you'll get it back within 14 days. 14 days passed, nothing, so I wrote again.

Second reply: It's the IT system problem, please wait and we will reinstate your status. Waited another 14 days, nothing happened. So I wrote again.

Third reply: We reset all the status on Jan 1. It was a honest mistake made by another CSR, only apology and nothing else.

After this I have lost some trust in PC's CS.

It's ok because I asked to reinstate Mr, Nacho's status, and leave mine. However if it's involve a big amount of $ and you don't get that - then you really are SOL.

I do not trust the Phillipines-based PC customer service at all.

It doesn't matter where they are based. To me, the whole IHG thing is a mess - in both good and bad ways. We just have to make use of the good ones and avoid the bad ones. ;)

I don't pay $ to stay at IHG - I use their PB and points on expensive destinations. Of course their BRG if the currency is right.

The bonus points come approximately 48 hours after the original purchase points. The descriptor is incorrect, but the points are accurate.

Here is an actual example of a posting under Account Activity:

Jul 18, 2012 | Other | POINT PURCHASE - 15% BONUS | 5,000 pts.

Jul 16, 2012 | Other | POINTS.COM | 5,000 pts.

well, i did manage to register for the 'crack the case' promo by calling....it can never hurt to ask....you can always ask the agent to send you an email stating that they have registered you for the bonus points....

i would have called myself but i am currently traveling overseas & won't be back till september....

I used twitter and they said if I'm not qualified for it then I'm not entitled to the offer.

How do you 'gift' in this offer?

I have clicked the link and it takes me to a screen where I enter my name and PC number, then a screen to choose volume and then a payment page - where do I enter the account details that I want to post the points to?

I doubt that you can 'gift' in this offer as it stated very clearly that it's for 'you'.

It's not true. You can gift points with this offer. There is a Gift button and then you can enter the recipient's PC number. The bonus is also 100%.

That's interesting because there is no 'Gift' option when Mr. Nacho log in. The whole thing he got was all addressed as 'you', your points etc.

To gift points to others you must buy at least 1000 points first. After confirmation those buttons will appear. I gifted 50000 points to my wife, she got 50000 + 50000 points and all count for status. If you buy up all points (50000 points) this year you cannot buy more points and therefore you cannot "gift" anymore.

When I go to the link, should it clearly state the "100% Bonus" promo there? It doesn't say anything about it - I'm wondering if they only extend it to lower-point accounts to try and gin up business. I do about 200K a year.

Also, try this link if you want to gift points and not buy points first:

I bought 30,000 points earlier this year when there's a promotion for 20% bonus. 2 weeks ago I received an email for the 100% bonus and I bought another 20,000 points + 20,000 bonus then I gifted my wife 50,000 + 50,000 bonus. Afterwards I cannot buy anymore points. I mentioned the 1k because I want to let others know if he wants to gift later don't buy up all the 50,000 points for this year.

However timmyc99 provide a link that you can gift without buying points.
I was targeted therefore I can gift the base and bonus points.

(Bolding mine)

You have misunderstood the offer.

You would actually receive 100,000 points for $575 under this offer; it has NOTHING to do with "if you stay two nights" -- you use the points to book rooms for as many or as few nights as you wish and can afford.

Quote from the offer:

As a special offer just for you; buy or gift points between July 10 -31, 2012 and get a 100% Bonus on your purchase. That's DOUBLE the points!

It's an excellent deal, compared to currently available alternative ways of buying points.

I got the offer and am mulling over how many points I want to buy and which credit card to use -- gotta act fast, expires soon. ;)

I'm not sure where the confusion lies, but I understand the offer and what you're saying. It still doesn't change the fact that, in total, you're getting 100,000 points for $575 and, depending on whether you spend 30,000 or 50,000 points, you're still spending $172.50-287.50 per room per night, which is good value in some places (Le Grand Paris) and not so good in others) IC Manilla). That was the point I was trying to make.

Of course, and as others have pointed out, if you can find a PB offer at a location that meets your needs/wants then staying 20 nights for 100,000 points ($28.75 per night) is excellent value at ANY IHG property....

The confusion lay in the portions of your quote that I bolded, where you said the offer was for "50,000 points for $575" and that "a 'free' night at an IC will cost between $345-$575... except for the 100% bonus which brings the price down to $172.50-287.50 if you stay two nights." Clearly, that is a misstatement of the offer.

Of course I agree that points redemption is a good value in some instances and not in other instances. That is one of the beauties of these loyalty programs -- there are always opportunities for arbitrage. Cash hotel rates, even for a given individual hotel, vary wildly, depending on season (high/low), weekend/weekday, special events, special discounts/offers, etc. Vis-a-vis the available cash rates, points redemptions can be a wonderful deal or a terrible deal or anything in between. But these are general truisms that have nothing in particular to do with the offer at hand. You can always find ways to squander points or to use them wisely. ;)

Ah, now I think I understand where you got confused.... I never said the offer was "for" anything and, therefore, couldn't misstate it.

What I said (or tried to say) was:

1) You purchase (for example) 50,000 points for $575
2) You get a 100% bonus, so another 50,000 points using my example
3) I assumed that these points would be used to get a "free" (points) night or nights
4) Based on those facts and assumptions, the buyer would be, in effect, purchasing a night (or nights) at a cost of $172.50-287.50 (30,000-50,000 points at $5.75 per 1,000 points if staying at an IC) per room, per night
5) At that cost (30,000-50,000 points at $5.75 per 1,000 points) it may be a good purchase or a bad one based on where you were planning on using those points.

Personally, I tend to let my points sit and devalue over time so I don't have the need to purchase even more. I was just looking at whether it was a good option or not and what I came up with is if you're using your purchased points on a PB trip it's well worth it. Otherwise it may/may not be depending on where you want to use them.

You should be :D if they refund you the $ - what they can do instead is to charge all the cards and then refuse to give out the bonus - as if you are buying your points from your own PC account.

I asked PC about the promo before I found out that Mr. Nacho can give points to me, and they said it's targeted. So I won't be able to buy points from my own account and get the bonus.

My point is that the worst IHG can do to the ones who used your account to buy point is that they charged their cards and not giving them the 100% bonus - since it's a targeted promo. The whole point of you 'gifting' points is that you use your own $ to buy points to the others. The whole thing would have worked if those FTers wired you the $ and you used your CC to buy points to them.

I have asked PC if I can buy points for myself before I found out that Mr. Nacho can buy me points. Their answer is a big NO and they told me that it's a targeted promo.

I know you are trying to help other FTers ^

You file charge back from your credit card issuer. However you can only file a charge back unless the issue hasn't been resolved. Write a couple of emails to IHGs and explain that you still hasn't got the points. So you can have them as support documents when you need to file a charge back (you need to show that you have tried to resolve the issue).

If I were you I'll wait until the end of this month, if nothing happens then you might considering going to your CC issuer to file a charge back.

No points for me. I originally emailed the IHG agent (Mary) the day after marko posted her contact info. She responded in a long and enthusiastic email saying sorry and that I would get all the points once she sorted out the matter with points.com. Her email wasn't a standard form letter so I was feeling pretty good.

After a week, I didn't see the points and emailed her. No response. I never had the time to chase her for the points, since I've been traveling quite a bit. This week, I saw the credit card charge was refunded.

In my work, I hate people who over-promise without substance and then fail to deliver.

My impression of IHG, coupled with a recent Crowne stay, is now the worst of all the major hotel chains.

I do think that IHG staffs don't really know what they are doing. Yes that agent was over-promising and I'm not even sure she knows the case completely before answering your e-mail.

However you shouldn't be so angry that you didn't get your points - you violated their terms for the promo in the first place. It's a 'targeted' promo, therefore you can't just use other peoples account to buy it.

It's like getting someone's card from Cotsco and shop - I don't think Cotsco allows that.

You should feel lucky that you get the refund instead of charging you and get the points without 100% bonus as you are not entitled to it. I thought IHG would do that.

Marko had nice intention and it's nice to help other FTer :) within what is allowed.
