A remarkable fare has appeared tonight for travel between BWI and various So. Florida airports. Both AA and AirTran are offering $59 one-way fares for fall. I've found it on AA nonstops to MIA and FL nonstops to FLL (doesn't seem to be offered on Southwest flights). Great availability, particularly on AirTran where almost every nonstop is available.

I'm guessing this originated with a Spirit fare, and has now taken a life of its own. Not sure if anyone else has joined the party; AA's participation did not appear on ITA.

BTW, the new USA version of topcashback.com appears to be offering a $5 rebate PER TICKET through Priceline (where the fares also pop up), so if you have the patience to make a new rez for each passenger in each direction, you can apparently save an additional $10 per trip.

The only ones I found at this price were direct and came out to 6.2cpm.

I think that may be true. Obviously, this is a better deal for folks who actually WANT to fly this very popular route with reasonably flexibility than those just looking for the lowest cpm.

Right, the fare kicks in after Labor Day through mid-December. AA has a lot of days open, but not all weekends. If you're just looking for cheap transport between the DC area and So. Florida, AirTran's flights are wide open at this low ball price during this period. I'm an AA Exec Platinum but, frankly, the FLL airport is so much easier than MIA (think car rental, security, etc.) that it's very tempting to just jump on the Airtran flights. Sacriligious, right? :)

Thanks OP. I have Veteran's Day weekend on hold. Just have to decide if I want to drive up to BWI ;).

If you do it, send me a PM as I may be on your flight. :)

Thanks to Spirit (and, to a lesser extent, Jetblue) DC hasn't seen quite the run-up in Florida fares as other cities. But unless you're willing to fly Spirit on one of their crazy off-peak fares, you're not too likely to get from DC to So.Fla for $118 these days.

This fare was announced on July 11, in a WN press release (there are no longer any press releases from AirTran...they are always on the WN website).

The $59 fare is a promotion tied in to the addition of up to four additional BWI-FLL nonstops per day, starting 09/06/2012. Between WN and FL, there will be a total of up to ten daily nonstops on the route.

Thanks. Very interesting -- especially since WN has generally shifted its strategy of late to avoid these lowball promo fares (bad for those of us who've enjoyed getting them matched by the legacy carriers). Even stranger, WN itself is not matching the AirTran fare on their own BWI-FLL flights!

And I can't really understand why AA feels compelled to match on their BWI-MIA flights. AA is being a little judicious about it -- like not offering $59 for most weekend flights -- but it's hard to imagine this is a profit maximizing move.

In any event, it would seem like at least the AirTran fares will linger for awhile, since it's a published sale.

Spirit's entering the BWI-FLL and BWI-DFW market around Sept 6th and pulling out of DCA altogether.

Interesting -- I missed that news, which seems to have been barely reported. Seems like an odd strategy to take on Southwest (and their Airtran subsidiary) head on, when you could get higher fares at slot-restricted (and more convenient) DCA.

Bingo! And this is why they are pulling out. Anyone in their right mind would NOT fly Spirit. BWI has a lot of lost cost customers where their model is more supported!

Southwest extended Airtran's travel window today and I was hoping this fare might be offered for winter travel but, alas, no dice. You must complete travel by mid-December.

Frankly, this is the best airfare in America these days because it is so easy to use, and is on such a popular route. Yet, it's not getting much attention. It's not even on the airfarewatchdog's "Top 50" fares. Oh, well. A great "friends and family" rate. You don't have to book in the next 15 minutes to snag it on alternate Wednesday flights. :)

I guess you could also use this as a positioning flight for a mileage run out of FLL :)
