US Airways Dividend Miles - Silver upgrade chances BOS-CLT- or use miles to upgrade?

I have a relative who's traveling from BOS-CLT. The relative had no US status, and so I have been trying to use miles to upgrade the relative. No seats have been eligible for upgrade, but now the relative has become Silver Preferred.

The plane is an A321, and under half of the FC seats are taken. Most all of the exit row seats are now taken, and the flight is a bit more than a week away. The flight is an early afternoon on a weekday.

Is there a good chance that the upgrade will clear, or to be sure to get the upgrade, should I just use miles (if a mileage upgrade seat opens up)?

I am GP but am not flying.

Thanks!

This is more of a function of time/day than anything else. As a silver, I get upgraded most of the time LGA-CLT, so literally YMMV.

Well, she'll know in a few days. :D

I think it would be a waste of miles to upgrade on a 2 hour or so flight. It's not like you'll get a meal ... just the snack basket.

I'd put her in an exit row and and spin the wheel. Start checking at the CP upgrade window if you're not already within it, and start looking for exit row seats.

Wow, on weekends on during the week? That's my commute and I usually get upgraded (as a GP), but I usually travel only on weekends.

This is a tricky one. First class isn't that great on this route.. you get drinks and the snack basket. No meal. I personally wouldn't use miles, but have been in F quite a few times.

Row 1 is typically blocked, so before 7 days from departure, it hides the true number of seats available. If there are 16 seats, 4 blocked from Row 1, and 4 blocked from purchased/mileage tickets.

Depending on exactly how many exit row seats are occupied, you may still have a decent chance.

But if your relative has rarely flown first, why not upgrade them with miles and just feel good about it. The reduction in number of miles is pretty helpful.

BOS-PHL my upgrade rate is about 60% as an SP. I generally find that middle of the day and late evenings are better - though I was once on the last flight of the day and the upgrade didn't clear. It's always a YMMV kind of situation...
