Los Angeles - Hotel advice in Los Angeles

I'll be driving Route 66 with two friends in September and have the hotels all planned for the whole route except for LA. I could really use some advice on a good hotel in Los Angeles that would fit in our 150usd/night budget for 3 people including breakfast. We will have our rental car for the whole time we are in LA, but I have absolutely no idea what would be a good location.
Since one of us works for Marriott, we enjoy the employee rate at the hotels, so a Marriott brand would be preferrable.
Anyone feel like sharing some advice?
1 guy and 2 girls in their 20s...

Glancing at the Marriott LA properties, it seems to me that their Residence Inn Beverly Hills (http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/laxrb-residence-inn-beverly-hills/) is best located. It's actually south of Beverly Hills, in a rather nondescript area, but a safe area. Here it is on Google maps (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=1177+South+Beverly+Drive+%C2%B7+Los+Angeles ,+California+90035+USA&ie=UTF8&hnear=1177+S+Beverly+Dr,+Los+Angeles,+California+9 0035&t=m&z=12). You can see you'll be very centrally located assuming you'd want to check out Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica. You're also not far from the 10 fwy if you planned on going out to Disneyland.
But I know nothing of the property itself. Here's the FT dedicated thread on it (I see the last post is from '08, so I suggest asking on that thread if anyone's stayed there recently and if they recommend it):
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/marriott-rewards/593616-residence-inn-beverly-hills.html
And here's its TripAdvisor page:
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g32655-d84453-Reviews-Residence_Inn_by_Marriott_Beverly_Hills-Los_Angeles_California.html
And while I'm throwing links at you, here's the one to the Marriott Rewards (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/marriott-rewards-427/)forum on FT, where I'm sure there are many threads discussing the pros and cons of the different LA properties. Do a search there, or start your own thread there - that's the best place to find out everything on your Marriott options.

Nondescript area indeed, but walkable to a really great Peruvian restaurant http://www.piccaperu.com/
Hotel-wise, a little more information about what you want to be doing in LA would be beneficial, and how long you will be here. Are you looking for beach/Hollywood touristy/themeparks/culture (in LA, eh?)/etc?

Route 66 ends at The Santa Monica Pier so I would probably try to stay near Santa Monica to mark a meaningful end to your trip.

Lots of airports near LAX that fit your criteria, and it's fairly close to everythiing - well as close as you are going to get in SoCal.
Used to stay at Hampton Inn during the week and Holiday Inn on Friday night (price dropped from $250 to less than Hampton Fri-Sun). IIRC Hampton had free parking.
And a short hop from Santa Monica down Lincoln Blvd.
