I am sure this is true, but ONLY by a vote of the Turkish parliament. Before rebranding, the airline was named THY--Turks said that was for THEY HATE YOU.

THY is the abbreviation of: Türk Hava Yolları;)

They are much better now than the days you refer to, however, 'Best Airline Of Europe' is a heavy title.

Not really that surprising. Skytrax ratings are heavily influenced by advertising spend and TK do appear to spend a decent amount on adverts.

That said, the competition in Europe is not all that hot anyway - LH NEK for anyone?

i have flown turkish airlines a few times during the last four years. i think there a few things that are truly excellent: the seat in intercontinental premium economy is really excellent value, the food is absolutely amazing, no matter which class you fly - i personally found their intercontinental c catering is at par with the likes of swiss f, also the istanbul 'cip-lounge' is very good after renovations have been carried out. but the service level is quite swinging, and they still 'hate you' sometimes - many of their staff have this cunning technique of covering up their lack of english with blatant arrogance. and when things go wrong at turkish airlines - cancellations, long delays, overbooking or technical shortcomings - they really go wrong! their staff regularly seem clueless and organization does not seem to be one of their strengths, e.g. a nyc-bound flight i had been on was diverted to washington, there was no explanation given whatsoever and shockingly, there was absolutely nothing organized to get us passengers to our booked destination, plus i was dumped 3 times from arn to ist at various levels of booking classes, missed business meetings and connection flights and was mostly not even offered an apology, their staff gave the impression that denied boarding is a standard procedure - thy!
so best airline in europe - i don't know.

well, as a frequent flyer with Turkish Airlines, I voted on skytrax, and I believe Turkish Airlines and its Crew deserves this title .
THY is currently flies around 250 destinations , which makes it worlds 7th biggest airlines. it is passanger growth rates is one of the highest in the world, too. also they spent so much money for sponsorships and advertisements. now on facebook they have 1 million follower. with help of construction of 3th airport in istanbul, they will continue to grow for sure.

No doubt it is TK's attention to detail and/or perhaps their elegant front of cabin "fresh" flower arrangements that put them over the top. ;)

I would rate LX higher than TK in Europe. I just hope LH management let them be as it is.

:D Did you take a picture of the toilet on a TK aircraft. I found fresh flowers in toilets in Y.

I would rate LX higher than TK in Europe. I just hope LH management let them be as it is.

For Y, I think LX does well for Intra-European flights but not Iong haul for Y. Seats are worn and old and on board catering is boring. I never fly C or F so I can't comment on it.

Also I don't like LX's booking interface for booking long haul because you can't mange your booking, change/book seats. Web check-in wasn't perfect either, I typed in a frequent flyer programme number and I click add (before I entered the whole family's FFP numbers in, then the check-in ended without giving me a chance to put in the rest). I couldn't add it in afterwards either, I had to ask the check-in staff to manually put them into the system.

As a Y pax, TK is definitely my favourite airline. Mr. Nacho actually ate on board food with joy when he was on a TK flight. He refuses to eat plane food but I got him to try the TK one and he said he actually looks forward to meal time.

TK is great when things are running as they should, but as soon as you have any problem then you are SOL. I always make sure that I'm covered by travel insurance when I fly TK.

TK's booking interface isn't nice either, you still can't reserve seats at booking, however I was able to do 'reserve and pay later' today when I was booking my flights. It wasn't possible last year.

LH NEK is bad, as well as their A380. I flew LH A380 to SFO and I definitely think TK is a class above LH. The best thing about LH for me is their toys for children - they put in a lot of effort into it.

Not a big fan here of Turkish Airlines nor them being named best airline in Europe. I've had too many problems with them. Primarily with how easily they will cancel/delay a flight and then not have a concrete process in place on how to address the rebooking in a timely manner.

A month ago I arrived at the airport at 9:30a for a noon Turkish airlines flight to Ankara and low and behold the flight was canceled [delayed in their opinion] and I ended up being rebooked on another carrier at 7:15pm for a 8pm flight. Spent the whole time at the airport because they kept pushing back the departure time by only a few minutes at a time all day.

I've had flights with them where they would not fly of weather but then they rebooked me on a another airline to fly to the same destination in the same weather conditions.

Boarding process is usually horrible [which is not unique to them]

And they are some jerks about overweight luggage fees and how to pay for them. I think I was a kilo overweight on my check-in bag, they charged me [not the biggest issue in the world] and sent me over to the sales desk to pay before I could get issued a boarding pass. The comment from the lady once I reach the sales desk is that she would prefer that I pay with something other than Amex because it will take 20 minutes [all the while I'm thinking this is ridiculous and I may miss my flight now]. Now mind you, Amex is one of the their partners and I'm standing next to the Turkish Airlines American Express advertisement while she's telling me this.

Once on the plane I havent had too many issues except that they have asked me to deboard the plane while I was on my phone in my seat, while the rest of the plane was boarding because no phone calls allowed ever when on the plane even if the plane is still on the ground and the door is wide open.

Add on to the fact that I'm never sure that they really care to transfer over FF miles to Star Alliance partners in any time frame under 8 weeks or until prompted if you still remembered to do so.

I'd vote for KLM, Swissair or Lufthansa, above Turkish Airlines every time.

+1 I vote for TK above any carriers for Y - especially after trying their new 737-900 IST-CPH flight - I have never tried anything better.

NEK :td::td::td:
