Travel Technology - Can I use my old Kindle power cord with my new Kindle Fire?

I have a new Kindle Fire and I'm wondering if I can use the white power cord from my old Kindle (the kind that has a USB plug that plugs into an adapter for the wall socket) with my Kindle Fire? The KF power cord is kind of clunky with the big adapter that plugs into the wall. I don't want to ruin my new toy by using the old power cord, plus old cord is a lot easier for travel.

It will work fine. Both cords have a transformer (the "big adapter" on the Kindle fire, and the adapter into which you plug the usb cable on your old Kindle).

It definitely won't work "fine" as the old charger was rated at less than half the amount required by the Fire to charge (850mA vs. 1800mA).

If it is turned off it may charge slowly but it will either not charge at all or charge extremely slowly if it is on.

Well, I guess the clunky charger is going to Europe with me. Thanks for the advice.

i use the smaller charger for my fire from the old kindle 3g, it charges just fine. Takes a bit longer, but overnight i'm not using it anyway. If your phone uses micro usb you can also use that, but obviously it itsn't easy if you have two devices that need to be charged overnight.

IOW, as I said, it works fine. :D

I would question why one of the world's experts in supply chain management would go out of their way to include a completely different charger in the box when they have had millions of the smaller type manufactured if it's "fine". If you're just going to leave it overnight though you are correct, you probably won't notice the difference.
