Hello everyone, love the forum and thank you so much for the avis/usairways points thread. Def got some extra mileage from the rentals recently.
Quick question and if its been asked I do apologize, I have the silver membership with USAirways, sadly I had to fly out with United (im on the trial right now and I couldn't a usairways flight). How do I get my United flight attached to my Usairways account? Do I call up United and just give them my USairways membership number? Since im flying United does that mean I could get a first class upgrade if there is one open or is that just on USairway flights?
I apologize if this has been asked before! I did some searching but couldnt come up with anything
Thanks again for a wonderful forum that helps those fly a little bit easier who are always in the air

Several options: You can pull up your flight info on the UA website and add your US Div Miles number under the passenger profile -or- when you check-in at a airport kiosk for the flight, you can change/add your US Div Miles number at that time too.
Note that US Silver Preferred status on United doesn't really get any benefits (a slightly better boarding zone #) so don't expect any benefits other than miles credited to your US account.
Welcome to FT!!! :)

Thanks!!
Geo you are in the same area as me, curious why you prefer DCA over IAD? IAD parking and area seems less busy

Welcome!
If you're doing a trial for preferred status, only flights that are on airplanes that say "US Airways" on the outside count towards keeping your trial status, so the flight on United that you're referencing will not count towards that, but you WILL earn miles that goes towards your overall dividend miles balance.
Re: Upgrades on United as a US Airways Silver. No, you will not get any upgrades on United for free. There has been a trend recently where United will sell you an upgrade to first class when you check-in online, usually for less than $100 ("Tens of Dollars"/TOD). What you will get, however, is 1 free checked bag and "priority" boarding after United Gold/Star Alliance Gold members, but before the general boarding groups. Your boarding pass will say "*S" for "star silver" to signify your silver status w/ US.
Re: adding your US # to your United reservation. There are 2 ways to do this. 1) call up United and have them manually enter the information, although the way UA customer service is going recently you'll be waiting 45 minutes on hold. 2) The far-easier way is to go to United.com, look up your reservation information, and there should be a link that says "add/edit passenger info." Click that link, and towards the bottom of the next page there should be a space to enter your Dividend Miles #. After you do that, your DM # will be attached to your United flight, and you'll be set to go.
Hope this helps, and good luck on the trial!

*S does get 1 free checked bag FWIW.

You'll get 1 free bag as a US silver as well.
You MAY find a GA that will let you have E+ free, but that's certainly a YMMV and it's not the norm. Don't be disappointed if it doesn't happy.
UA's been known for the TOD upgrades (Tens of Dollars) lately, which makes upgrades affordable. However, it often pisses off their elites as others jump ahead of them for a small fee. That's about the only way you'll get upgraded on UA.

Interesting; I'm joining the Fed. Gov. workforce next year, and have been wondering how this will effect my FF status/earning. Should be an interesting adventure.

I can hop the Metro direct to/from DCA from Alexandria (Old Town)... ^
The only time I will use IAD is if it's the only option or if flying international and it doesn't make sense to connect. I takes an hour to get there from Alexandria during rush hour and then you get the hassle of IAD's security lines even if flying C/F. In many cases, I'll fly DCA-PHL/CLT/ORD-Europe as the connection times often are about the same as the trek to IAD.

Fed. Govt. Travel is usually limited to the contract carrier for the specific route and that depends on GsA's City Pair Awards. Depending on your travel coordinator you might be able to do a non-contract acarrier but that is on a case by case basis.
In regards to your Frequent Flyer earning you will receive all of your applicable points in accordance with the Joint Federal Travel Regulations (JFTR). JFTR also allows for you to upgrade to FC (based on your preference).

Hi all, I'm in a someshat similar situation but have a few different questions.
I need to fly out of PHL to TPA then to TLH and then back to PHL. Our corporate policy does not allow me to book flight except through our Amex Busines Travel site. When looking at opitons I can book the following flight:
United #2945 - Operated by US Air
United #2308 - Operated by US Air
United #3999 - Operated by United
United #2262 - Operated by US Air
United #2578 - Operated by US Air
So my questions:
1) Since these are on US Metal, do I qualify for free upgrades?
2) Do I get PQM miles and segments for all flights?
3) Why is it a $400 price difference by booking all through United versus purchasing seperate with US Air and United?
I'm US Gold, very close to Plat (75 segments and counting) and will only get to Chairman through segments. I've been very lucky with upgrade (even got an upgrade from PHX to PHL on a friday).
I appreciate any insight and can've even convey the amount of knowledge I've already found on FT:D

First thing to do, go into the UA system and get your US PNR (confirmation number) if the flights are not showing already in your US account. You want to make sure that all of the flights will be credited to your US account.
Question 1: You'll need to report back to us. Old rules were that you were not supposed to get US privileges when flights booked as UA flights, but everyone and their brother was getting these privileges -- upgrades in particular -- anyhow. There is a very recent thread about Move-up (of all things) that includes some great insider info from Mykle on how IT fixes at US were finally supposed to quash this. But at the point that the Move-up new rules were programmed in, there were reports (in that thread) that folks were still getting upgraded as US elites on US-metal flights ticketed through UA. If you work your way to the end of that thread, however, you will see that the original Move-up roll-out was something of a bust, which may or may not have had to do with programming issues, which may or may not mean that US has finally figured out how to deny upgrades to US elites on US metal with UA tickets. Whoosh -- is all that clear? Point is, this is happening in real time, thus my first sentence to this windy paragraph. (Btw, no way on the middle flight, since that is UA metal, at least as you typed it.)
Question 2: Yes, you will get miles and PQMs for all these flights (status issues referenced in the preceding paragraph notwithstanding).
Question 3: Who knows? When not encumbered by purchasing or travel department rules, one finds times that sometimes US is selling UA seats for less than UA is selling them; sometimes it's the same; and sometimes they are selling them for more. Substitute UA for US and vice versa in the preceding sentence and it is still true. One way to look at it is that it is irrational. Another way is to try to imagine that you understand, and to post explanations to that effect on the board. A third way to look at it is at a possible advantage that is always out there for the taking.

Thanks Biggie, as usual you came through with some great answers. I haven't booked the trip yet and will update if I do and what my experience was.
