HI,
I'd like to rent a car in Newfoundland for a week - St. John's or Deer Lake/Corner Brook, preferrably. Unlimited mileage please, but it can be a small car.
I've found them to be very expensive. Are there any local, smaller companies that might have better deals? Or what would be a good way to get a better deal?

Things get expensive in the summer season and even availability can be an issue. In addition, unlimited mileage is not a given. I find that Expedia.ca has the best contracts - given the season, their range of rates seems what to expect. It's a long way to ship rental cars so the fleet is limited. Sometimes they have deals on manual transmissions. I have not seen local companies but Discount works with repair shops. They have three locations within St. John's http://www.discountcar.com/locations.cfm?locations=St.%20John's

Thank you, a manual would be great. :-)
I will call the Discount Car outlets. The online booking is not operational, I have to call each station separately. But thank you for the info!

if you're coming between now and mid-september, good luck - huge demand, minimal supply and booked up early.
very tough to get unlimited mileage.
you can also try the car dealerships - all the major companies have dealers in St. John's and most in CBrook as well - they sometimes have a couple of loaners available, but a long shot for sure.

I just rented from National at YDF for under $50 per day. They did not offer unlimited km, though. I think it was $0.20 per km over 200 per day.

I tried Discount Car, but it was not cheaper at all.
We decided not to go to Newfoundland and spend more time in BC instead. The car rental cost in Newfoundland (base price and km on top) was unsustainable.
Luckily, Westjet charged us a mere C$ 52.50 per person to cancel the flights we had already booked.
