just booked a pretty good MR for mid October travel.

ironically, this is a similar route to the very first MR I ever did. That was back in 2009. Anywho..

I booked EWR-DTW-SLC-BUR-SLC-LAX-JFK October 20 6am flight and return around 6am on the 21st. I'm likely going to try and SDC the last leg LAX-JFK to something with another connection to push the miles up a bit. But if I'm not able to SDC it's still a nice little MR and right at 24 hours start to finish. 6165 miles at $287.

Though i found this fare on ita matrix I was unable to "book" this flight on delta.dumb. Had to resort to Orbitz instead and that worked fine. Figured that was better than calling DL agent and going through the rigmarole of "explaining" why I was booking this flight.

Happy flying boys and girls. happy flying.

BUR-SLC-LAX-JFK has got to be one of my favorite routings :) On the outbound, you can maximize CPM by doing ATL instead of DTW.

Same day turns are available
JFK-SLC-BUR-SLC-LAX-JFK, still 4.5cpm

I remember that MR in 2009. I did IAH-ATL-SLC-BUR for $130 RT... and I remember a bunch of folks doing the same from EWR (and we had a delay going back from BUR-SLC and got an extra $50 voucher for the delay) It's not 2009 anymore!

Nice find. If you're on the flights I'm seeing for those dates then you have 2 pretty tight connections on your outbound. Good luck!

That's a good idea but looking at the schedules now it doesn't seem like I can make it work. the SLC > BUR leaves at 11:05AM and the soonest I can get to EWR-ATL-SLC is 12:00pm so I'll miss my connection to BUR.. It's still 3 months away so maybe a schedule change will help me out.

The last LAX-JFK leg i will definitely SDC thru MSP, ATL to bump up the miles. Plus much better UG chances than transcon LAX-JFK.

Thanks. I have a few tight connections (30-35 mins) on the outbound. Luckily the SLC-BUR-SLC portion appears to be the same metal so that helps. Fingers crossed

Cool little trip. I can't squeeze the LAX turn on both legs and still get same day. Bummer, but I'll still probably snag one of these. Thanks OP!

Booked on orbitz, have to go to multi-city option and enter each leg seperately, ewr-dtw-slc-bur-slc-lax-jfk for the same date. Looks to still be available.

Excellent, the key part was "same date", it didn't occur to me, so i was looking for a return on the 21st. this is my first MR & I'm currently silver. Also, this is what I see in my account. Does it mean I'll be Gold after 10,710 miles for the remaining of the year and next year if I can get the 10,710 miles this Oct?

Also, I was able to book it on delta.com after looking confirming the fares on Orbitz. typical delta website issues, works sometimes and does not whenever it feels like it. kicker part of this itinerary is not spending the night at the airport or hotel since that would bump up the cpm.

What's left is convincing my wife that this is actually "worth it". we recently received upgrades when we flew to MEX, so that might just help ;)

You need 50k total MQM's in a calendar year Jan 1-Dec 31 to reach Gold. Are you Silver (FO) for 2012 or 2013?

If you're silver for 2012, that means you have 10.7K miles to reach silver for 2013. Then you'll need another 25K miles on top of that by Dec 31, 2012 to reach Gold for 2013. of course if you hit 50K miles before 12/31 you would be Gold for the rest of 2012 and all of 2013 (and I think thru Feb 28, 2014).

I became Silver last year (08/17/2011). sounds like this mileage run + additional 5k MR will get me silver for next year?

Looks like DL isn't offering it anymore but UA and US are matching the OPs price.

Anyone that booked on DL for this get a schedule change that's messed up this entire MR?

Yes, I did. Instead of:

JFK-LAX-SLC-BUR-SLC-LAX-JFK (~7200 MQM) it is now
JFK-LAX-SLC-BUR-PDX-JFK (~6900 MQM)

Assuming you called the desk to route that out of JFK? Missing my first leg if I stay on EWR (which I'd happily change anyways).

Nope I was able to buy it on DL.com ex JFK. Didn't have to call.

I was originally on EWR-DTW-SLC-BUR-SLC-LAX-JFK. First leg EWR-DTW 6am flt was removed from schedule. I need to call DL and change that first leg LGA-DTW to keep my original routing. But want to spend more time researching to see if I can't maximize mileage on the outbound legs. EWR-XXX-XXX-BUR.

I'm in the same boat as you, worried if I get greedy with it they'll try to remove all the legs entirely via DL desk support.

Just booked a similar itenerary on UA not as a mileage run but could qualify as one.
DCA-EWR-SFO-BUR-SFO-IAH-DCA for $307 (booked as 2 one-way tickets) with a 1 night stay in BUR.
Total EQMs earned: 6908 (with the 500 elite minimum)

I survived my first MR.

- Delta cancelled first leg our of EWR so it's eventually JFK-SLC-BUR-SLC-LAX-JFK for me.
- The flight attendant on SLC-BUR-SLC is super nice and confirmed that there are 4 of us doing this thing.
- Due to the flight number is the same for SLC-BUR-SLC, I cannot check in for my last 3 legs, I had to wait when I got to BUR and checked in from outside of the security line, nevertheless it seems I was not on the upgrade list on the last 3 legs.
- Only upgraded from SLC-LAX (thanks Delta)
- Very tired taking the regional CRJ200 jets.
- SLC-LAX was oversold so I volunteered, received $24 food voucher and $400 credit.
- no problem making all connections, even after taking the last flight from SLC-LAX leaving only 20 minutes for connection, still plenty of time left.
- I thought about SDC to LAX-ATL-JFK and was too tired to think or do anything.

It's a wild ride I'm so tired now probably because only one upgrade, I will do this type of travel<=1 time a year :)
