I've utilized the recent SQ computer upgrade to bank 77W F seat SIN-HKG using UA miles.
There are 2 out of the 8 dailies that are on 77W (1 on A380, rest on regional product). If SQ decides to switch my flight over to A380 one day (just very hypothetically), would they honor an existing First class reward booking and place me in Suites, or would they involuntarily downgrade me to J since Suites (R) is considered above F ?

Yes. SQ is honoring bookings and will switch you from F to R.
Chances of that happening SIN-HKG: zero.
Best chance: SIN-MEL, somewhere after October...

Zero because of lack of demand, because lack of planes, or because higher priorities exist ?

How about my chances in February to Australia? I'm booked in F on the 777-300s on SQ211 (SIN-SYD) and SQ218 (MEL-SIN). I'm actually feeling pretty good about getting at least one nice surprise... Two would just be crazy :)

I don't know whether it's still the case, but a bigger problem might be that not all of the SIN-HKG flights offer FC. This was true about sixteen months ago.

SQ217/218 or SQ237/238?
Since 227/228 and 237/238 are scheduled so closely together, I guess using the A388 on both flights would be an overkill in capacity. I guess the A388 would be put on SQ217/218, right?

All together. Planes have already been publicly committed to MEL and I am afraid the yield to HKG is not that great. The one flight is for marketing purposes more than anything else.

I have placed some bets (read: F redemptions) on SQ217/218 and rumor has it that those flights are the most likely to see the Whalejet soon. Fingers crossed.

Since I prefer SQ1 (arriving SIN 11:55 am) because of the departure time and the possibility to spend a day in Singapore instead of arriving at 1:05 am on SQ15, booking SQ217 (departing 10:10 am) to MEL wasn't much of an option for me unless I wanted to spend a lot of time in Singapore. Hence I'm on SQ237. I guess I'll have to make do with the F class seat on the 773 :D

I'm not flying out until mid/lat February, so I'm remaining quite optimistic. Plus, given I'm going into SYD and out of MEL, I'm giving myself a double chance at "glory!"

I deliberately choose to fly overnight to maximize my time at my destination and optimize my time onboard: After take-off I am the first asleep and I am the last to wake up.
6 hours of straight sleep is more than enough for me. And Suites offer a better bed than First :-)

Only 2 fat planes are yet to be delivered. 1 will be used for MEL. Since there is only 1 more, unlikely that LHR will get a 4th. A LHR rotation requires 2 planes to make a daily frequency. I think it will be a regional destination - HKG, NRT, PEK, etc.
But you never know .... Some destinations may lose and LHR's 4th may be possible.

http://tinyurl.com/bu2ub85 With this most recent announcement, I can't see anything else changing between now and the end of March. While I'm soooo excited to get 7+ hrs on my SQ218 (MEL-SIN) flight, I sure would have loved to have my SFO-ICN-SIN flight bumped up as well. No matter, I'm excited that SQ is spreading the love and that so many of us (espcially those who got in on the award-ticket floodgates) will now have a chance to try this incredible product!!!

SQ has still not updated Krisflyer!
You can book First Saver for end of December till end of March for
SQ637/638 SIN-NRT vv (still 77W at present)
SQ1/2 SIN-HKG-SFO vv (still 77W at present)
and those First seats will become Suites in the next couple of weeks!

I stand corrected as bookings for SIN-HKG-SIN on SQ1/2 will become Suites. For those with only few KF miles, book a one-way and enjoy Suites from end of December to the end of March!

In general you won't ever be downgraded from F to J. R is now the same as F, it just denotes "suites". When SQ started the 380 they were able to get a surcharge over F for suites which is why the started calling it R (the Concorde did the same thing and they also used R class). However, SQ 380's in R are now the SAME fare as a 77W in F. SQ could no longer get the surcharge for suites since the biggest route for them is the Kangaroo route and other airlines don't put surcharges for suites (notably EK who not only have suites but 2 upped SQ by adding the shower spas and bar/lounge in back
They also compete w 380s on the Kangaroo route w QA who although has no suites, still gets a lot of traffic thru BA & OW
SQ just was able to squeeze that surcharge while 380's were a novelty. They no longer are
If you fare SQ FRA-SIN or VV both flights are now the same in F (or R). The 380 and the 77W (325/326 25/26)

Does anyone know if you can earn miles on the R class inventory if you were originally in O class award F?

No. An award is an award. Even if they put you in R SQ is who gives you the miles, not UA and they will catch it. (if UA were responsible for awarding miles on partners then you might get it since we all know SHARES makes that mistake 100000 times a day. But Unfortunatly SQ is a lot smarter

However, SQ 380's in R are now the SAME fare as a 77W in F.
I am afraid that's not quite right:
When SQ started offering Suites, the only booking class available was R.
For First Class, SQ is offering F, P, A, O.
O is saver award and *A award and A is SQ's standard award.
SQ was making it a point in the beginning that redemption bookings do not need to be honored due to the fact that R is priced over even the most expensive booking class F.
Today, SQ is offering Suites and for those, booking classes R, F, P and limited A.
There is little to argue for Suites that these are still fetching a premium, hence redemption bookings are honored.
Booking class R and with it the ueber-expensive prices are still around. It's just that no one is booking it anymore.
The only funny thing is that Suites tickets in P are quite inexpensive while mileage redemptions are only possible at 'R' rates - you are looking at a million miles to fly from SIN to LHR...

Everything you said is correct. My point was while R still exists at a premium over F, there is no need to book a pay a premium any longer for suites. (at the beginning you HAD to pay extra for suite class). However, You can get them for the same first class fare now (unless you WANT to pay more). Very similar to UA's ridiculous new "J" class. Priced much higher then "C" but for the same seat w nothing extra
I usually take 325/326 between FRA-SIN. It is priced the same as 25/26 in F Now (only difference is the seat vs suits (I prefer the 77W on this route simply because it's very common to be alone in F while the 380 is always full. Once you've taken a 380 25+ times the novelty can go away unless w SQ your traveling as a couple (then its the best product in the air) OR on EK's 380's for long haul flights as the showers / lounge make a world if difference.
(I have NOT taken the SQ 380 over 25 times (3 times). It was just my point that the novelty goes away. If I count EK, LH and QA then it's been about 25 times

Let's wait and see what happens ...
There were some cases where SQ honored the O award redemption to O+ when the flight changed to A380. But there has also been cases where SQ rerouted passengers onto their other flights or another airline rather than change it to Suites Class.

Maybe it is now... it wasn't initially. Back in the day when the first aircraft swaps occurred and R was new, folks did get miles. I wouldn't expect it to happen ever again, but it did despite the fact that "an award is an award" :)

Looks like my flight SQ638 from Singapore to Narita on March 7th was switched from a 777-300 to an A380.
I have a reward ticket in first.
On United's website when I check my reservation it's still showing the 777. But on Singapore it's showing the A380.
SQ's website should be more accurate right? When picking seats it's the layout for the suites.
If so, I'm excited to be flying in the suites!!

Unless you need to modify your reservation (which must be done with UA) stick to the SQ website going forward--for seat assignments, Book the Cook, check-in, etc. It contains the current and accurate information.

Thanks for the advice. Will do that.
I tried to go to Singapore's website to do all that but when I put in my SQ booking reference it under "manage booking" it doesn't work. Want to know how to Book the Cook, and check in when it's time.
I can choose my seat on the mobile website w/ the same number though.
