Not sure if this is the right forum to be posting this particular query but since the initial ticketing was on IT i thought it would be better to post here. Moderators: Please feel free to shift the post if there is an alternate forum better suited for this query.
So i was sitting on 150,000 about to be useless King Miles and decided to redeem 100,000 of these on a one way J redemption on FinnAir from Helsinki to Delhi for 2 adults. I had used some orphan United Mileage plus miles for the onward ticket. The tax component over and above the miles including YQ came to about Rs 9000. Now i had got this redemption for 2 adults and we were travelling with our 9 month old baby daughter. IT asked us to get in touch directly with Finnair to get the infant added to our PNRs.
I called the Finnair office in Delhi and was quoted a sum of 339 euros as the infant fees which sounded very high to me. The issue they mentioned was that since this was a one-way ticket there were no excursion fares available and that they had to charge 10% of the full fare which was 3390 euros (which i confirmed from the Finnair website). They also said that it was a high fare to pay for an infant so they would write to their corporate office in Helsinki to see if something could be done. The e-mail was forwarded and came back with a 'regret' reply.
I decided to take a chance to get the infant added at the Helsinki airport thinking that the full fare could not increase further and that my downside in terms of any additional spends was capped. At the FinnAir helpdesk in Helsinki i gave them our PNR and the daughter's passport to the lady manning the desk. Post that the next 10 minutes went something like this.
Tap tap tap (Finnair lady tapping on her computer), hmmmm this doesnt seen right, tap tap tap tap, hmm seems like i will have to do this manually, tap tap tap tap tap tap (for a good 5+ min). There it is Sir, its done. The fees comes to 15.3 Euros.
I could not believe my luck and not wanting to push it any further was very happy to pay the 15 euros and scoot from there. This was a day before our actual flight and while i was expecting that someone would ask me to cough up the additional amount on check-in, there was no such issue. Anyone here has any ideas what could have happened? The 15 Euros seemed even lower than the actual taxes (without YQ) so was i plain lucky or is there any insight in terms of what one needs to say while adding infants to itineraries.
