We just returned from 7 days at the Concorde Lafayette in Porte Maillot Paris. We stayed there as we were attending a meeting the the PALAIS DES CONGRES and this was a convention hotel. I made the reservation through the Concorde site and reserved a Club level room with Queen bed.

On arrival, I checked in at the Club area. It took 30 minutes for the person ahead of me, and 30 minutes for me to check in. I have no idea why...the desk clerk just puttered around. I ended up paying for the entire stay on arrival. I'm not sure the reason but it was OK from an exchange standpoint. If I had wanted to leave early that might have been an issue.

We arrived at our Club level room and noticed how hot it was. The carpet was also very frayed. It was immediately apparent that the A/C didn't work so we called to get it fixed. 90 minutes later , no repair so we called again and spoke with the general manager who sent someone to fix it. We went out for a stroll and returned to find it working. When we sat on one of the 2 double beds pushed together (not a queen) one of them squeaked terribly so I went downstairs and asked for a different room which they gave me with no protest. There were 2 other guests complaining about A/C and that they still didn't have a new room, so I guess I was lucky.

We changed rooms and this was better (not an upgrade..the same type of room.) We then went to the lounge. The food in the lounge for breakfast and tea was fine. The staff were pleasant if not overly friendly (with one or two exceptions). There were a few specific guests who would take a lot of food to their table, taste but not finish it and leave. I wouldn't care but after they took all of something, the staff wouldn't replenish it which could be frustrating.

The concierge desk folks were somewhat surly and frequently couldn't recommend restaurants claiming to "not know the area well". No one ever tried to help us get a taxi which was not a problem for me but was for other guests who didn't know where to stand.

We had a conversation with one of the club staff members who explained that they knew the hotel was rundown, but it was one of 4 or 5 Paris hotels purchased by a member of the royal family of Qatar to be closed in 2 years, renovated and then run by Hyatt.

I've stayed in Paris a number of times in everything from B&B's to small boutique hotels to the Intercontinetal Le Grand (thanks to deals I found on FT!). From a price/appearance/service/value standpoint, the Concorde Lafayette was pretty sad. I couldn't recommend it at this time, certainly if you couldn't get a Club Room.
