Both my wife and I are waitlisted for U on this flight. I'm SL and she's GR. MPC would not issue the upgrade yet up to this point because there are still 8 revenue seats open. Wouldn't upgrade her to SL despite the remaining 500 miles on her GR which she will accumulate on Jul 8 on the CGK-HKG flight.
What are the chances for us together and individually? If someone can please check availability that'd be great. Thank you :).

Thank you so much for the swift reply! Unfortunately I'm fairly new here and don't know how to read this properly :(. Can you please translate? The alpha is fare classes and the number is available revenue seats?

This is an interesting situation. Your flight on Sunday is overbooked in Y, but still has few seats left in J. Because of that, those with higher MPC status than yours are likely to bet on the op-up and don't go for the miles upgrade, which is in your favor.
The question simply is how many are on the U waitlist ahead of you. I wonder MPC would tell you that, but anyway nothing much you can do.

Thanks for the explanation! MPC wouldn't tell how many people are on the wait list. What is your recommendation at this point? For me to call MPC again and ask to issue the U ticket or check with the counter at HKG (which counter since we're transiting from CGK?).

I think AA_EXP09 was trying to tell you that classes J, C, D, I, Y, B, & W shows 9, E shows 3, whereas others show 0. However, this is the availability I get now:
As I have repetitively said in this forum, there is no way to check UG availability other than calling MPO / AM. No tool and no website can show that info. The award availability is a good indication, however, and can be found using CX's website. At this point, since only 4 J seats are left available and the FLT is departing tomorrow, I would recommend you ask at the airport whether they have seats for upgrade with miles.

Thank you so much for the info + recommendation! Seeing that I'm transiting from CGK. Where exactly do I go to ask this at HKG? Can I ask when I land at 2pm (flight is at 5pm)? Thank you.

The UG award falls into the same zone for whether it's CGK-HKG-YYZ or just HKG-YYZ, so why not ask at CGK's check-in desk if you can redeem a one-way UG for all the way?

I see. In Sabre / Abacus, "1" means "availability display" when put as the first character in the command. Perhaps next time I should use "108JULHKGYYZ" to avoid confusion. The second line does say "08JUL," though.

Are you indicating that it's the same miles to upgrade CGK-HKG-YYZ and just HKG-YYZ? I was under the impression it's different and wanted to save my miles. Please advise... Thank you.

Now I realized what I did wrong. I looked at 829 availability instead and put in the city pairs in the wrong order.
I have experience with Apollo and Amadeus, though.

Don't have experience with Apollo but Amadeus was the first system that I learnt. I agree that the abbreviations AN, AD, AA, and AE makes much more sense (in fact, Sabre does not even have the equivalent of AE) than "1," which doesn't mean anything.
Didn't know I can combine 2 segments together like that! Are you for real? Haha wow! When I searched on AM, there's no award points for CGK-YYZ. CGK-HKG is different and HKG-YYZ is different so I thought I had to add up the two miles.
FYI I cannot redeem an upgrade straight through. They must be processed separately and the miles required do add up. At least that's what CGK CX staff told me.

Probably too late for you now, but of course it is allowed. CX has no FLT from CGK to YYZ so yes you have to break it in HKG, but both segments can be on 1 award. Go to http://www.asiamiles.com/am/en/redeem/flightawardfinder?WAright=TopNavFlightAwardFinder, select one-way UG, from Y to J, put CGK-HKG on CX, then "add sector," and put HKG-YYZ on CX. The miles required will show as 45000mi. In http://www.asiamiles.com/am/en/site/terms#14, it also says, "4. For one-way award travel, the sum of the total sectors to be flown will count for redemption purposes. In such circumstances, only one en route stopover is allowed."

I have never tried Instant UG but what the airport staff told you doesn't seem right. In http://www.asiamiles.com/am/en/redeem/upgrade, T&C 9 says, "Not applicable to any onward connecting flights other than the first flight from the departure port." If CONX FLTs are not allowed in Instant UG, there is no point for having this clause.

Thanks, Ernest. Any other users with direct personal experience on upgrading a connecting flight all the way through? I only recently begin traveling the CGK-YYZ route several times a year and so, a newbie at this. I would appreciate anyone's inputs.
I wanted to save my miles so I didn't think of upgrading the HKG-CGK-HKG leg of my segments but it might have been a huge mistake if the number of miles are the same. When contacting MPC directly, they did confirm that I only wanted to upgrade the YYZ-HKG-YYZ segment, but if the miles are the same isn't it behooved upon them to inform me? Maybe not so.
I will be flying this route again in the next 2 months so any input is appreciated. Thank you.

FYI, although I have never used Instand UG at the airport, I have done TPE-HKG-JFK and TPE-HKG-SFO UG many times (and TPE-HKG-ORD once as well as JFK-YVR-HKG with YVR being a stopover once). I only buy K class TKT if I can secure a U booking, though.

Two questions:
1) On those flights above, how did you UG K to U? Did you call MPC and ask for a UG through all segments?
2) How did you know you can secure a U booking before buying K?

1. Yes. I book both FLTs together and issue them as 1 UG award.
2. Ask MPO is U is available (CX website check is also a good indication). Make a K booking through TPECX or YVRCX by phone (for TPECX, no need to issue the TKT until several days before dep., and for YVRCX you need to push them a bit but they can hold the booking. for you for awhile). Book a U reservation through MPO. Issue the K TKT when the deadline for U booking is about there, and then ask MPO to issue the UG.

Sorry for being a dumb newbie, what is TPECX and YVRCX-- are they CX offices in Taipei and YVR? If yes, what's so special about them? When you said "no need to issue the TKT does that mean we don't pay for the ticket yet or?
How would you check U through CX website check? Is it just seeing if Y and Y+ are overbooked, how many JCI-seats for revenue are left, and etc?

Yes - TPECX = CX's Reservation Team in Taipei (serving Taiwan) and YVRCX = CX's Reservation Team in Vancouver (serving Canada and the U. S.). When you book through the reservation team or through a TA (Travel Agent), you do not have to issue (pay) the TKT right away, and can hold the booking for a period of time. There's nothing special about TPECX ad YVRCX. I happen to live in Taiwan and the States so these are the 2 offices that I call.
On CX's website, you can book award bookings online after specifying a country. The inventory for a regular award is not quite the same as UG, though both booked in U, but if you see seats available as award online, there is a good chance you can get it for UG, too, and vice versa holds as well.
