Are you talking about a phone card for making calls from a landline or a SIM card for your mobile phone?

If the former, you can buy a prepaid phone card for dirt cheap at pretty much any bodega or drug store. Or you can buy them online. I've used nobelcom.com in the past, which isn't the cheapest but has very clear pricing and good quality.

If the latter, you should be able to get a prepaid AT&T or T-mobile SIM card at any AT&T or T-mobile store once you arrive. They're all over the place.

thank you! i would like to buy a phone card for making calls from a hotel landline to a landline in germany.

my old walmart card cost 10 dollar and a minute to germany was 7 cents. my hotel offers free calls to toll-free numbers, including 800. the walmart card is 1 800. hope this number is free to?

do you have a internet page where i can buy it or does anyone knows a store. i know in manhattan is duane reade. last time i was there but can't find the proper card. i don't want to pay anything to the hotel for the callings.

thank you.

Chances are that any unused values or $ balance on that old Walmart or AT&T Worldwide Prepaid Calling Card had expired as it is usually valid for a limited time only & definitely not for more than 365 days, maybe 180 days once activated - so you will have to get a new one for prepaid calls back to Germany.

Places other than Duane Reade to find Prepaid Calling Card in Manhattan are at those newstands found everywhere not far from your hotel ... if you cannot find a DR nearby, any other drug stores/pharmacy chains will be fine - as they will carry a variety of prepaid cards, i.e. CVS, Walgreen or Rite Aid, plus, the "7-11" Convenience Stores.

For refilling my own prepaid mobile phone's Sim card accounts, I've been using an online seller - www . callingmart . com - used my credit card or paypal accounts to refill my AT&T and T-Mobile accounts, and I get a 5% to 10% off the card's face value, no fees or taxes added and usually delivered my PINs by email in a matter of minutes (but, their fraud prevention dept. do sometimes flag a transaction and require a telephone/followup call before a purchase is processed or released - good) You should be able to check it from Germany - it looked like the rates at now about 3 cents a minute for calling from USA to Germany, rounded up to 1 minute intervals, etc.

Google a bit more, found some additional info on AT&T's Virtual Prepaid Calling Card (this might used to be called Worldwide Calling) - here's the link, hope it will help - http://attprepaidcard.amssupport.net/

Nobelcom has cards for calling Germany that are as little as 2.3c per minute (1.3c + a 1c surcharge if you use an 800 number--check if your hotel allows free local calling and you can save):

http://www.nobelcom.com/phone-cards/calling-Germany-from-United-States-1-108.html

The differences between the cards on the page have to do with rounding and maintenance charges. A card with 4 minute rounding will charge you for 8 minutes of time if you make a 5 minute call.

Note there's also a tab on that page for cards with connection fees, which are even cheaper per minute. But those only make sense if you make really long calls.

There's also a link on that page to a different set of cards that are slightly cheaper to mobile phones (the rates on that page are for landlines, and mobile phones can be significantly more expensive to call).

You can buy similar cards in drugstores, newsstands, convenience stores, etc. but they probably won't be quite as cheap. And as you noted it can be a challenge to tell them apart, as there will often be dozens of different cards for sale with a myriad of rates to various countries and lots of different surcharges and fees.

Unless you're making a LOT of phone calls, I wouldn't waste too much time trying to sort through them to find the absolute cheapest. Just make sure that the card you're getting is clear on the connection fee (ideally none), maintenance fee (ideally none, or at least not for a week or two), toll-free (i.e., 800 number) access surcharge (might be a few extra cents per minute), and rounding (ideally 1 minute, but if you're making mostly 15 minute calls, then a few minute rounding isn't a big deal). Most cards also have a payphone surcharge, so be sure to use your hotel room phone or some other regular landline and not a payphone.

Many phone cards regardless of the brand actually come from large companies like the Newark-based IDT. You can also buy a "phone card" (i.e. all the instructions on a computer screen that you can print, write down or save) at http://www.idt.net/personal/cards/
