Hi all --

Rented a Luxury one way next week and am trying to decide whether it's better to use my PC for $40/week off or for free NeverLost. Don't want to be stuck with a Town Car/Grand Marquis -- will adding NL help or are Town Cars still equipped with NL these days?

And if the location doesn't guarantee extras, is this conversation moot anyway?

I've seen many TCs with NL before, it's not that uncommon and don't think it's going to provide you with any security in not getting one.

Rental companies obtain a mix of:

- program cars, driven less than x miles within y months, with a guaranteed trade-in value

- cars that depreciate slowly, holding down cost of typical 12-month, 30K mile ownership

- cars they can buy cheaply for the typical assigned class

Ford had a manufacturing plant they had to keep open by agreement with the Canadian Autoworkers Union. It built Town Cars and Grand Marquis (and Crown Vics for police fleets).

Retail sales of Town Cars, Chevy Impalas, and Mitsubishi Eclipses were (are) a small fraction of total production, but the cars are built at low variable cost and have to go somewhere. Town Cars have been out of production for nearly a year. One's chance of being stuck with one declines every passing day.

Call Hertz CS and have them add to your profile "NO town cars or Grand Marquis". That doesn't stop them from giving you one but if it is in your profile, they are more likely to allow you to swap for another car.

When Hertz had the old Taurus with the anemic V-6, I put in the profile "NO FORDS". If I got the more powerful Taurus with a sub compact reservation, I usually kept the car. If I got the Vulcan (anemic) Taurus, I switched it out.
If I booked F, I asked for a different car. One place gave me a DTS instead of the anemic Taurus. ^ For the time, that car (DTS) had some power.

That was around 2008 or before.

I prefer a Town Car anytime over any of the other cars listed as "Luxury" in the "US fleet for Hertz" thread. And I know I'm not the only one.

A CTS or STS is a Luxury car? A BMW 3 class? None of these car can compare to the Town Car in terms of passenger space or trunk size. Come on, these are "Standard" cars, may be "Fullsize".

Even Hertz Germany lists the BMW 5 class as "Luxury", how can Hertz USA claim the much smaller BMW 3 class is a "Luxury" too?

In the end the Town Car always served me well as a large, luxury travel sedan, quiet, comfortable, reliable and with a huge trunk and an excellent leather interior. Exactly what I want on my US road trips (and I always got NeverLost on it and sometimes even XM/Sirius).

I'm not sure if I will get one on my upcoming trip later this year, but it will always have a special place in my heart as a fond memory of my USA road trips over the years.

The only thing I'm really missing, is MP3/USB/iPod connectivity. But I can still connect a FM transmitter to my iPod and enjoy my own music.
