Credit Card Programs - How soon do you call CC company for pending application?

Hi all. Just trying to get a sense for how soon you normally call when you get the dreaded "Application Pending" message when you apply for a card online. Do you call right away or give them a few days to see if it will get approved without a call? Thanks in advance to anyone that responds!

MIA - I'd actually be interested to hear if you think different banks should be treated differently. Today was my typical mini-app run that I try to do quarterly with 3 different banks. All 3 (Chase, Citi and Amex) resulted in pending status. I'm not panicking yet but I wanted to see if people experienced a higher success rate if they called within a certain time. I just would hate to hear that I ever got rejected because I didn't call in and inquire in a certain timeframe.

My personal experience with Chase is that I usually hear nothing, then get approved in about a week and a half. I don't think you have to worry about either asking too soon or waiting too long. This isn't like asking someone on a second date after the first date, where you have to be careful to be interested but not too interested.

I usually wait 3 days. I've never had a problem. Usually it's just realocating CL from current card to new one or cancelling one I don't use. Many people have asked this same question, everyone has a different time line they wait from 30 seconds to 2 weeks? :)

my recent experience with Chase :

applied on a holiday, got a further review notice - called in an hour (twice), but told it would take some time bef they get to it. Called back 2 days later, got approval... so 2 days appears to be fine?

Depending on my mood, I either call the next morning (I usually apply at night) or simply wait it out until I hear back. I can't think of a reason to wait a specified number of days

Agreed, but I would not call at night or on a weekend.

That's very good advice. I recently had an app with Chase on a Sat. I called on Monday and was approved.

Applied for INK and UA Explorer recently... Called immediately on the INK, and 2 days later (on a Sat) for the UA. Both approved, no problems or complaints!

For Chase, do you guys call the Reconsideration line while it's still pending or just the general customer service line?

Just applied for a Marriott Rewards Card and status is pending. Curious as to how you guys would proceed from here.

Call the reconsideration line (888-245-0625)

For Chase I have waited 4-5 days, it seems like they could pull it up whenever they want but sometimes the reps dont want to and will tell you to just wait more.

Thanks guys. I'll wait another day or so and call the Chase Reconsideration line and see what happens.

Do you guys typically mention factors in addition to your credit report? I am actually about to start traveling weekly to NYC for work and want to get a hotel card to accrue some points and prefer Marriott but could always go with Starwood... Sounds like it could be good leverage.

I mention my dissatisfaction with [insert competing card company here] and my desire to potentially shift my [insert substantial monthly spend here] entirely to another credit card company.

Typically, dangling that nice piece of juicy fruit in front of them is enough to get them to extend a paltry credit line (usually $5k or whatever). I really don't care. I get the bonus, and my primary spend credit cards are in the range of $10k-$15, which is frankly way more than enough for me.

As a followup, Chase and Amex approved 48 hours later without me needing to do anything. Citi sent me an email at the 48 hour mark asking me to call them - they claim it was just to see if I was comfortable with the $8.7k limit they were going to offer me. I got to chatting with the Citi rep and she said that there is no "best practice" for this. Some of their decisions pend on data checks while sometimes it's just a reason to have the CC company chat with a customer that has multiple lines of credit with them.

Just applied for Chase United Mileage Plus Explorer. I haven't applied for new CC for awhile and I have 4 cards with Chase. To make things complicated, I got my name changed 3 months ago and I haven't updated my mileageplus account with my new name. I applied through United.com to get the 60k offer, and it pre-filled with my old name. I knew it will flag the application. I called the reconsideration line 5 minutes later and told them the problem. They were able to approve my application by closing one of the CC I had and use the credit line for the new card.

So far I have just said "I want to check on the status" and then directly answer their questions, nothing more or less. It has been for business cards though, and the questions are about the business rather than the card itself.

Just received an email saying that my free night reward is available, event though I got the Decision Pending notice and haven't heard anything else.

I'm assuming that means I was approved. Would you call to check?

I have called within an hour using the reconsideration phone number and never had a problem being approved. My questions is always---just wandering if you were able to pull up the credit report for my application ...

I usually call right away. But that's because I'm impatient :D

Though it's never failed me yet. My way of reasoning it is, I'd rather call and explain and try to smooth talk my way into approval as soon as I'm denied and the application hasn't been looked at yet, than wait and have an analyst look at it, make up their mind to decline it and THEN try to smooth talk...

I did call once at night! :D But I agree, calling at night and on weekends is not a good idea because the Verification department is usually closed (Atleast for Chase)

Yeah, you've been approved. I wouldn't call. Unless if for whatever reason you want the card expedited, then you can call in a day or so.
