Avis - Presidents Club--asking for an upgrade in advance

there are lots of threads about what upgrades people have gotten, but not much on the process to get them--

I'm renting at SFO this weekend with PC status. Rented a full size, but could use something nicer (4 adults for a week in Napa). Any suggestions on an upgrade prior to the counter (or should I ask at the counter).

I'm willing to pay a bit more for the X3 or something like that as well

Just go to your spot and see what they have for you. If it's not what you're looking for, go to the desk and ask. At SFO, they have never given me any issues in getting something I request, except when I wanted the Corvette at 2am. They said the manager has to approve that in advance and he gave me their number. I wasn't going to call them at that hour, though

I've called the PC hotline and asked them to put a note in my reservation, such as requesting an SUV, but I've never really had much success with that. I always negotiate at the counter. I wish there was a better process though

I have tried to request a specific car ahead of time before and it does not work. They told me you can only request a specific class but not a specific car, and even that is based on availability. Negotiate at the counter works best for me. I wish there is a special aisle just for President and Chairman members to pick cars from.

so...here's what happened.

I called the night before and spoke to the station manager. He said he'd set up an SUV for me based on the PC status. I had wifi on the flight and got a message from avis that my Nissan Altima was ready for pick-up (ugh)

Got to SFO and found someone out by the cars in the preferred area. After a few minutes discussion, they let me take an X3 (awesome) -- my friend and I went back to the terminal to get the wives and the luggage and the X3 was too small (gotta love that). we went back to Avis and was able to get an Escalade with 13 miles on it (very cool!)

On the day of the rental I've been able to call Avis in LAX and ask if they had any vehicles with AWD and they set aside an SUV for my Full-Size rental, so it may be possible, however if I didn't get the SUV I wouldn't hassle them about it.

so...here's what happened...

always get nice upgrades as a PC. I've never asked for a specific car, only requested a different car 1x for more leg space.

I feel silly asking for a specific car since it's an upgrade anyway. Maybe it's just me. But, I do appreciate my PC benefits.
