KLM Flying Dutchman - No bag no passenger or no passenger no bag?

A delayed departure at ZRH cut the transfer at AMS from 50 min down to 40 min. Got on the connecting flight without any problem. Once the boarding was completed, 10 min away from scheduled time of departure, I went up to the purser and asked if she could check with the GA whether my checked baggage and my colleague's (on the same flight) made the flight.
Purser:"I'm sure your bags have made it. If not, we would have had to remove you from the flight."
Me:"Are you sure? I thought it's the other way around. If we missed the flight, you remove our bags."
Purser:"No. If your bags miss the flight, we have to get you off the plane."
Me:"Alright, anyway, could you please double check with the GA about our bags? I'm at seat 9C, and my collea..." Purser started talking to someone in Dutch on her handheld radio before I could spell out colleague's seat number. I assumed she's talking to the GA. After a quick exchange, she got back to me:"Your bag is on the plane."
"How about my colleague's? He's at seat ..."
"Your bag is on the plane, Sir." Purser cut me off.
At this point, I had to give up. As I returned to my seat and started to explain to my colleague about the purser's strange response, I could see from the window a luggage cart with our checked baggage just approaching the plane (we had two large plastic boxes containing dry shippers, not regular suitcases). I guess I should be grateful that the purser allowed us to board before the bags arrived:rolleyes:?

The purser spoke nonsense, of course. Pax cannot voluntarily separate from their bags. Involuntary separation, OTOH, is fairly common, as we know only too well. Bags may be subject to additional scrutiny in this case, however.

OTOH, I can see that gate agents would have rather other things to do than chasing after the bag status of transit pax when getting a flight ready for departure and that a purser might fob you off when making repeated requests on this. They could perhaps do it with more tact, though.
