Hertz - Hertz won't match?!

I am flabbergasted this morning that a business would be run in such a way.
I was quoted for a 10-day rental in Maui by Hertz for an intermediate rental for $600+. The same rental over the same duration on Enterprise is $250.35!
When I called Hertz they said they matched rates, but after we walked through everything they couldn't reduce it even a penny.
Just surprised in 2012 a company isn't competitive.

If you got offered $250.00 from Enterprise take it !!!!!!!
Full size on Hertz is $663.00
Full size at Enterprise is $511.00
Economy at Enterprise is $373.00
all for 10 days ...so go the Enterprise way

Hertz doesn't price match. And neither do either rental companies.
This topic has been discussed extensively over the years here.

I hope you at least booked the car through Enterprise to lock in the rate, while you explored other options.

It's just competitive on that rental. Totally normal...if you rent often enough you'll see everything - some other rental somewhere will have Hertz as the cheapest because of a code or coupon that you have.
They don't price-match each other.

Never tried at airport location, but at HLE's they do PMA's (price match adjustment)
You have to give them some kind of printed proof of other company's rate.

If they can get enough people to pay $600, why would they want to lower their price?
Enterprise has to rent 3 cars to make what Hertz make on one.

Sniff around at Alamo, Dollar, and Budget. Sometimes the "2nd tier" brands can get pretty close to the "3rd tier" pricing without all of the crap you have to go through to rent from Enterprise. (Yes, I know Enterprise owns Alamo but the rental process is still much different.)
Yea, I know we all love our "1st tier" programs like #1 Club Gold and Emerald Aisle, but the 2nd tier agencies all have decent enough expedited renter programs that it's not too awful...especially with a big price gap in play.
Play around with codes. If you're staying near enough to OGG, play around with weekly + weekend mixes. (It would require a car swap.) See what people are getting on Priceline. You may not beat $250...that's a pretty good rate for 10 days...but you may find some other options that are more palatable than renting from Enterprise.
I'd almost rather walk than put up with the Enterprise crap.

I'm typically Avis, but I've rented from Enterprise. What crap are you talking about? I don't think I've experienced it.

hertz does match but at the discretion of the agent

If they can get six hundred dollars for the car, there's really no need for them to match somebody else.
In the winter of 2010 / 2011 Hertz did a price match guaranty, it was actually promoted as a special offer, because they just don't do it.

We invite you to take the Hertz Ultimate Experience Challenge. We’re so convinced that Hertz is the best experience in rental cars that we’ll match any competitive offer!*
Just come to the Hertz counter with proof of a weekly or weekend reservation from a major national car rental company and we’ll match whatever deal you have, plus we’ll give you $50 off a future Hertz rental. That’s two ways to ensure that you’re getting the ultimate value on the first name in rental cars - Hertz.
Participating Airport Locations in the U.S., Puerto Rico and U.S, Virgin Islands.
I was looking at a car once and Avis was 1/3 the cost of Hertz, so I of course went with Avis. The hertz price never came down, but when we got to the destination and headed across the all the companies, Hertz had a line, and a sign saying out of cars. Even at three times the price.

For me, Enterprise always seem to want to play the "that scratch wasn't there game".

Because somebody else will pay $600+ for the car you didn't rent. On Maui, there's high demand and not exactly a lot of one-way drop offs. Why should Hertz cut its price? On the other hand, OP found a better deal and should take it.
