I'm in Livingstone, about to spend 24 hours in Johannesburg en route to Tanzania, where it appears I will need US dollars. I'm out of USD, though.

From searching it seems there may be currency restrictions in SA on taking out US dollars.

If you have any advice, please share it.

Unless something has really changed since I was there in January, in J'burg you will need the South African rand. U.S. dollars will be of no use to you there. There's a form you fill out if you take in/out more than 10,000 dollars but that ain't gonna happen so don't worry about it. You can get the rand at the airport. There's tons of ATMs.

To answer my own question, it was easy as pie. At the Amex Foreign Exchange counter at the airport all they needed was my ATM card, my passport and a paper copy of my airline ticket out of the country. I didn't have the proof of ticket printed and they forgave that. They charged 2%.

I also got more dollars at the Amex Foreign Exchange office in the Rosebank mall. They needed passport and ATM card - no ticket. Also 2%.
