Is it just me, or has the latest round of Acela F meals really gone downhill? The Korean short rib today was puny and tough. The plate size is more akin to that of an appetizer. And get rid of the tiramisu already.

I think you got a bad cut. I had the short rib twice the last time that menu cycle was running and it was excellent IMHO.

As for the Tiramisu, it's my understanding that's one of the most popular deserts. They started it on Acela, but it has since expanded to many of the long distance train dining cars and continues to be popular there too. And it travels well too.

Was it the "Korean" short rib? The previous short rib I had on Acela was excellent. Yesterday...not so much. This one was completely different.

Yup, the Korean short rib.

I agree with AlanB, i've had the Korean short rib twice now and it has been very good.

However, I do agree with you about the tiramisu. While it is definitely a step up from the measly Ghirardelli chocolate square they were doing a while back, it would be nice to switch it up a little.

There are 4 menus that they cycle through every 3 or 4 weeks. Of those 4, the tiramisu is the desert on 2 of the menus. The other two have a Key Lime Mousse.

They were also doing the carrot cake for a while earlier this year. Like over the winter. I must have had the carrot cake 3-4 trips in a row. But I much prefer the tiramisu to the carrot cake.

The dish I miss the most is the tandoori chicken ceasar salad, which I last had at some point in 2011. That was delicious.

I must have missed that one....sounds good!

Agreed - I had this last week and thought that it was truly a terrible piece of meat... very tough. I'd had the short rib in the past, and I think there is something different about it this time around.

Also, I agree that portion sizes have gotten smaller lately. The meals that I miss are the bison meatloaf and the crab cakes.

It seems to me we need a meal thread here complete with menus and pictures. Most of the airline forums have one - why not Amtrak? I've got a couple burger pics from the Silver Service dining car that could get us started. :D Thoughts?

Sounds like a great idea to me. I have an Acela F trip coming up next week, so I will plan to take some menu and food pics.

No need to take pictures of the Acela First class menus, they're already online right here (http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/BlobServer?blobcol=urldata&blobtable=MungoBlobs&blobkey=id&blobwhere=1249241560993&blobheader=application%2Fpdf&blobheadername1=Content-disposition&blobheadervalue1=attachment;filename=Amtrak_Acela-First-Calss-Menu-2012.pdf).

Those menus rotate every two weeks through October 14th, which is when new menus should be issued.

I am powerless before that tiramisu. It bears absolutely no resemblance to actual tiramisu, but if I allow myself even one spoonful, the next thing you know, the whole thing is gone!

I've been getting those Korean short ribs every time I take a dinner-hour F train and I like them. Amazingly, I find the sauteed spinach accompaniment very well prepared.

Well, considering that the entire dessert is three spoonfuls (at most), don't feel too bad about it!

I believe they mean photos of the meals, not the menus. Great idea!

Well he did specifically say take a picture of the menu. Hence my post.

Yesterday's Acela breakfast, the spinach tart (there is a slice of ham lying on top of it--that was how it came to me). This was good, but bizarrely garlicky. I like garlic, but maybe not at 7:30 AM.

I'm sad that oatmeal is no longer on the breakfast menu. That was my standby. From now on I will probably do the fruit plate, but I'd rather have yogurt than the cottage cheese they are offering now. The French toast sounded good too.

The "Amtrak Steak" is quite the hit and miss. I've had it where i thought they cooked them by putting them directly on the track and running the stock over it and i've had it where it actually passed for somethign not half bad. The breakfast tart was ok the other day, the garlic was very very strong and the juice from the tomato made it a bit mushy but it was better then the "spanish omlet" from last week.

I do miss the lobster salad from last summer.. that was good.

I have had the Korean Short Rib three times, once catered ex-NYP, once catered ex-WAS and once catered ex-BOS. The NYP and WAS preparations were good, nice pieces of meat, while the BOS catered piece was scrawny and tough.

I have a weakness for that tiramisu, while not traditional, it is good and I have cleaned the plastic container each time.

Here is my favorite, the chicken tandoori ceasar salad.
