Southwest Rapid Rewards - Different PNRs for Award Travel

Other than the oldest reason in the book, "because it's always been that way", is there any practical reason why I have to have two PNRs when my wife and I fly together on award travel booked from my account? I tried to search this, but can't come up with the right search terms, sorry.

Well, there are probably IT reasons specific to WN. Doesn't make the answer any better.

SWAVictor probably knows. A guess would be it is the only way SWA's unsophisticated software can keep track of which Award is attached to which passenger. That's important if the expiry dates differ and one or more of the originally booked passengers cancel. (Even if the software could keep track of it, clearly and easily presenting the info the customer in the confirmation Email could be difficult.)
Imagine if we had to worry about Award expiry dates being tainted by being commingled with other Awards, similar to the commingling of funds issue. Remember that until recently funds were commingled on multi-pax itineraries. Until that change it was only possible to attach one expiry date to the funds attached to a PNR, and presumably one expiry date to the Award used for (each direction of?*) a PNR. As RR 2.0 was already in the works when that change was made, there was no reason to update the Award tracking portion of the software.
*In trying to put this into words I realized that I'm not aware of how well or poorly the system handled RT Award reservations where the expiry dates of the two coupons differed. Back when Awards were issued with two coupons under a single Award number, could you book a RT with two different Award numbers? I only used the "select alternate coupons..." screen a couple times.
