I really really really want to drive the Transfagarasan Highway (after seeing it featured on Top Gear). I'll be in London in August for work, and thought about flying over to Bucharest Friday night with the following plan:

-Pick up rental car Saturday morning, first thing
-Drive north from Bucharest and have enough time to stop and take gobs of pictures of the road and scenery
-Overnight in Sibiu
-On my way back the next day, go via Poeinari to see Vlad's castle
-Turn car in, see a bit of Bucharest if I can, fly back to London

Thoughts?

It might be a bit ambitious, but perhaps doable. Just know that roads in Romania can be a PITA and will take longer than it appears just by looking at the map.

Sunday you want to leave from Sibiu, see Dracula's castle (ok so far), then head back to Bucharest (the drive back on a Sunday afternoon during the summer can be quite painful in terms of traffic), then see a bit of Bucharest (it's probably already evening by now), then go back to OTP to fly to LON (if the flight isn't LATE chances are you will not make it in time, even if you skip Bucharest).

If you return the car in OTP (as opposed to Bucharest) you may have a better chance, otherwise it seems a bit risky IMO

OTP is far from Bucharest. Bucharest has virtually nothing to offer in terms of sights. I'd skip Bucharest, it is not an interesting city to explore.

Ok, it's done. It'll be tough, but then again I drove from Oslo to Bergen and back in less than two days so I think I'm up for it. Going to skip Bucharest completely, rent a car from OTP, and get after some Romanian highway.

"Romanian highway" is actually a rare commodity. ;) There are very few highways (2 complete that are very short and a third one that's being built and should be ready in about 600 years)
