I'm seeing on exploretrip.com Oct16-28th for that price with the Island hopper on the return. It doesn't tell you that it's the Island hopper, but looking at the flight number/schedule you can see that it is. (Flight 172).

Supposedly this is a published fare that I can see on ITA, but not sure how to book it.

GCM returns 16906EQMs (w/500 elite min) for about 4.5 cpm, but of course adjusting for flight numbers it's 14737 for around 5cpm. Quite a map.

I am a little confused about the terminology of "island hopper". Does it refer to one specific way of going from GUM-HNL (or reverse), or can you do it by any combinations of segments, as long as you are going from GUM to HNL? Thanks!

The island hopper makes that specific route with all those stops and does it both ways. If you want to go from one of those islands to another, you can take the hopper and price the trip individually. It is like Liat in the Caribbean that hits a bunch of islands on its way from one major island to another; you can get on at any point along the way. But to go GUM to HNL or vice versa, I would skip the hopper as it just wastes time and there is no advantage for miles.

I did the island hopper last year for fun. Once is enough though. You stop at each island for about 40 minutes. On one island the left side of the plane gets off for a security sweep. On another island the right side. Most people don't believe me when I tell them that. It is a long day. Also, upgrades are not easy to get. I think you need to clear the entire island hopper trip and not island by island.

The trip report by Michael El is a good one.

Booking it isn't always simple. You may need to use a booking engine with multicity capability and choose the appropriate days for each segment, keeping transfer connections at <24 hours. I did LAX-HNL,HNL-GUM,GUM-NRT when I did mine. Crossing the date line makes it a little tricky. I think I booked on Orbitz.

As a diver with a WWII interest, the Island Hopper is amazing. You can go to Palau (Pelilieu) to dive and visit the sites of the vicious battles there, and then make a stopover on the way back at Truk and dive the Japanese wrecks, or explore Pohnpei or Majuro. Some have even made the stopover at Yap and taken the missionary plane over to Ulithi. There are hundreds of different combinations. I have been lucky on Island Hopper trips. All have been partly cloudy so you can see a thousand different atolls below with various shades of blue and purple. It is so worth the inconvenience to take it, as opposed to the non-stop to Guam. It seems UA has removed Cairns from that itinerary. Pre-merger, I was able to book a reward from Honolulu to dive the Great Barrier Reef and the Coral Sea and do stopover at Truk on the way back for 40,000 miles. The same is true of Nadi, where you could fly on the return to Honolulu NAN-GUM and choose your stopover on the Island Hopper. As I see it, for just a few less hours of sleep, one could take the 6am to Guam via the Island Hopper and and have some fun, or take the afternoon non stop to Guam and read a boring book. Both flights arrive in Guam at about the same time.

On the Island Hopper, yes - but on flights that change aircraft, I've seen my trips posting as separate segments with the same flight number. So someone would get the GUM-HNL direct mileage (although the Island Hopper journey itself is priceless with nothing to do with miles and one should consider overnight or multi-day stops along the way), but HNL-LAX, LAX-SFO and SFO-SEA should all credit with their own mileage and upgrade segments assuming aircraft/crew/gate changes.

The routing rules for these itineraries are written for GUM-HNL. It is only by virtue of having a single flight number that you're permitted to fly the Island Hopper. I strongly suspect that you would not be able to schedule stopovers at the islands along the way.

I'm gathering stopovers are not permitted... (please tell me I'm wrong!!!)

BUT... if any of our more experienced colleagues know how stopovers may be possible, without blowing the fare (i.e., using ff miles, or ???)...

I would definintely be in for this !!!

According to the fare rules above, stopovers are allowed in area 3 at $100 but not in guam. I would think that would limit you to TYO and OSA based on routing rules. And only on the way out based on current availability.

Others may have more experience here though...

As a diver with a WWII interest, the Island Hopper is amazing. You can go to Palau (Pelilieu) to dive and visit the sites of the vicious battles there, and then make a stopover on the way back at Truk and dive the Japanese wrecks, or explore Pohnpei or Majuro. Some have even made the stopover at Yap and taken the missionary plane over to Ulithi. There are hundreds of different combinations. I have been lucky on Island Hopper trips

ANA doesn't allow one-way awards. You'd have to add an extra segment within the USA to make it work.

Also, the Island Hopper is much more enjoyable westbound when it is daylight rather than eastbound when it is dark. :-:

Booked this for October. Outbound SEA-NRT-MNL on NH, crossing fingers that SEANRT will be 787 by then ^

Return flying MNL-GUM-(Island hop)-HNL-LAX-SFO-SEA. I found out after booking that the HNLSEA segment operates as a direct flight.

Total r/t airfare was $764.40. Includes 2 nights in MNL. My friend(s) and I will be looking for hotel recommendations.

Also, selected seats on the right side of the a/c for views (A-B-C), is that correct?

We did the hopper Eastbound - definitely a lot of fun. At the time, we could have done stopovers for $100/ea, but we were just doing a weekend trip to Tokyo and didn't have time.

The dive maps in Chuuk/Truk were simply amazing! If we ever do this again, we'll definitely plan a stopover there to dive.

There are nice beaches in Palau and Majuro. The beaches in the Truk Lagoon are OK and you can hire a ponga to show you all of the islands in the lagoon and/or head to the ocean beaches, or go fishing. I enjoyed Pohnpei because you could snorkle or dive with the mantas, hike around Sokehs rock and head out to waterfalls and Nan Madol ruins.

Interesting. I've always thought about crossing the international date line to skip out on most of my birthday and remain young. :D

Far better what I did once - my CO flight SYD-HNL got cancelled so I got AA (AA metal) after some delay. Having had my birthday in SYD it was a very strange feeling for the sun to come up and have my birthday all over again in HNL. No one around to give me double presents though......... :D

I've flown on the island-hopper a number of times. The first was as an alternate to HNL-GUM (as I had an overnight in GUM either way), and that inspired later visits to MAJ (twice), Pohnpei and Kosrae. The way to do it was to book a 25K award out of MNL with stopover and see 2 spots (and Palau and Yap also were eligible). This being pre-merger.

Before 9/11 you could get out and walk around at the airports, but afterward as a thru passenger they herded you into holding pens like so much cattle.

Also, they can only wait out bad weather for so long before skipping an island. KSA passengers had to be offloaded in PNI on one flight I took and sent back on the next one eastbound.

Pohnpei's a beautiful island that'd get lots of tourists if it had a beach (other than offshore). The real hibiscus and waterfall thing, + Nan Madol. KSA is even slower-paced. MAJ itself is NOT really a tropical paradise (though there are nice sections of the island, like Laura), but it's culturally fascinating and very threatened by rising sea levels.

All places are also especially great if you like eating tuna.

All have been partly cloudy so you can see a thousand different atolls below with various shades of blue and purple. It is so worth the inconvenience to take it, as opposed to the non-stop to Guam. It seems UA has removed Cairns from that itinerary. Pre-merger, I was able to book a reward from Honolulu to dive the Great Barrier Reef and the Coral Sea and do stopover at Truk on the way back for 40,000 miles. The same is true of Nadi, where you could fly on the return to Honolulu NAN-GUM and choose your stopover on the Island Hopper. As I see it, for just a few less hours of sleep, one could take the 6am to Guam via the Island Hopper and and have some fun, or take the afternoon non stop to Guam and read a boring book. Both flights arrive in Guam at about the same time.

How do you book these stopovers? I'm a diver and would enjoy some dive stopes along the way. I'd love to book a stop in Palau for 2 days, Truk for 2+ days, and then Yap for 2 days. Too bad Cairns isn't an options as I'd love to do a week live-aboard with Mike Ball out of Cairns.

Any recommendations? Sounds like great diving oppportunities.
